21st time he got first star of the week which leads NHL (started in 06-07)

Sid is secondary with 12
McD is third with 11

I know he’ll break the record and for me he is the GOAT goal scorer and a fantastic personality for the game, but I have to just sit back and admire the fact that Ovie AND Sid are stars of the week in 2024. What studs we were treated to.

An under the radar milestone is that Ovechkin is currently 12th in career assists from a winger (as listed on NHL.com, which for instance, has Giroux listed as Winger who has played all forward spots throughout his career). 3rd amongst Left Wingers (22 behind Robitaille for second, won't catch Bucyk for first).

Gotta love his start, it would be typical Ovi fashion to not trickle over the record with a 25-30 goal year but rather smash it with a monster season.

I’ve just learned he’s also 3rd in all time hits (at least since the stat was officially tracked). If that’s true that’s pretty incredible to boot!
O is on pace to become #2 on hits list, he has 29 hits in 11 games so far this season,
trails Matt Martin by 197 hits with 153 games left on contract...

I'm so happy for the guy. He's got an awesome personality and is an all time great. Those of us that didn't grow up with Gretzky, prime Lemieux, etc. got to witness a pretty damn special player in his own right. In some offseason thread (maybe multiple), I always voted for him breaking the record sooner than later. I'm still amazed that it was even a question of "if" just a few years ago.

TLDR; Ovechkin is awesome. Go Ovechkin!

I would bump down Howe from that list. Howe played a lot more games than any of the others. You forgot about Mike Bossy!

I’m not here to argue if Howe belongs in the top four—rather, he certainly isn’t out of place. He led the league in goals five times and was runner-up another five. Until Gretzky hit 802, Howe held the career goals record. He also spent his prime in a low-scoring era, often with goal rates lower than the Dead Puck Era. In 1952-53, for instance, he scored 49 goals in 70 games when the league average was just 4.8 goals per game. The runner up was his own teammate who scored only 32. It’s also worth noting that he played only 70 games a season for most of his career.

As said, I’m not the one to argue it, but I had to respond because of you saying he played so many more games.
