It’s weird that ovechkin is still a 30 goal 60 point winger at age 39 and some people are acting like he’s an embarrassment to the league. Was very close to leading his team in scoring last year and somehow made the playoffs. Caps will probably score a few more and give up a few more goals this season, but probably be in the mix in the metro again. I would expect 25-30 for ovechkin this year.

Its even sadder when a player is still effective in his late 30’s and yet still gets accused of playing for the sake of the record. He scored over 30 last year. Thats a career high for most players in the last 100 years of hockey. Its just a ridiculous argument. People are trying to take away from something that they may never see again.
I guess people can go back and look at the video and make up their own mind about it and I'm not even talking about the playoffs here.

He is going to break the record but posts saying that he was an "effective player:"last year.......I guess you could be Ovi's mom?

What's weird to me is that they do it here, in a thread dedicated to his accomplishments. I get that not everyone is going to like him, but why trash him in this of all threads?

Heck, wetcoast alone has clearly spent hundreds of hours monitoring and responding to this thread just to trash Ovie. Get a life!

I agree different people have different valuations but for the people who demand winning.

What is literally the only way to win a game? He is the best all time at scoring goals. That’s literally 100% of the game. Shots saves corsi none of that matters. The only thing that matters is goals.
The reason why Ovechkin is close to breaking the goal scoring record in the first place is because he is one of the biggest volume shooters in league history

I don’t think a lot of people understand how rare it is for a player Ovechkin’s age to be a serious scoring threat.

Only Gordie Howe, Johnny Bucyk and Teemu Selanne have hit 30 goals at age 39+. If Ovie does it this year, he will be in the top tier of scoring longevity.

No need to get defensive over a perceived slight. I think being able to shoot the puck a lot is a skill not a flaw, but if someone is going to vapidly reduce hockey to individual goal scoring they should try to understand how someone is doing it.

When I first saw your post hfboards for some reason didn't show your post as a reply to someone else. No idea why but it sort of stood on its own, out of context. It makes more sense now.

So, should I start a separate thread on the Ovechkin - All Time Hits Milestone?

How f***n insane is it that the one player that WILL break the all-time goal mark, will most likely finish #2 or #1 in all-time hits? (Since it was recorded).

Sure but that's the point of the thread accomplishments no need for embellishments on his actual play and then when it's pointed out people cry.

Let's stick to the accomplishments part and skip the extra stuff maybe?

In your dreams sure I read lots of threads as I'm a hockey fan and when people say stuff that is clearly untrue I respond, it is after all a hockey discussion board right?

And frankly I don't want to talk about his "play" in here let's stick to counting goals and call it a day.

It's funny that you say this. My wife bought me tickets to go see Ovie play in Tampa last season. I can't believe what I was watching. A couple of times Ovie was standing still in the neutral zone, waiting for his team to get ahold of the puck in the defensive end. He wasn't even moving. He was just standing there. He looked old. Still like the guy, but he wasn't doing his team any favors (except on the power play).

Fully agree. Things are different when someone actually goes to the games in person and focuses on what a key player is doing every moment they’re on the ice. Those only ever watching on TV or looking at box scores wouldn’t know.
