Ovechkin Milestone Thread 2.0 - Passed some guy named Wayne, now NHL goalscoring leader (895)

Ovie says he did not plan to do the sliding celebration, he wanted to skate to the other end of the ice but stumbled and had to improvise:)

I am a little hazy on the details but I remember reading about one of the first Vikings to set foot in North America. With his whole crew watching, he tripped and fell with the first steps he took.

Knowing how superstitious the sailors were, and that his misstep would be considered a grave omen, he quickly improvised and clutched at the ground exclaiming “it’s all ours!” as if he had intentionally fallen to his knees. Crisis averted

So, I’ve got a few small souvenirs, dedicated to the occasion, from nhl.com. But while scrolling through the products, I’ve noticed this:

Now, be honest, who has splashed out on the, almost gone, bronze hockey sticks? :)

I mean there was only 8 made, and with 2 left (as of this point), that mean's no more than 6 people felt it a good use of $28,000.

Also, that thing is solid bronze and will weigh 22 lbs. That's wildly ostentatious.

Holy crap! I gave up after noticing the price and completely disregarded the rest of the description.

Ostentatious, indeed!

Congrats to the Great 8...this is one of those records I'd never thought would be broken.

Impressive. I'm eating crow on Ovi and Wash. The team just didn't roll over for the record they went out and played gr8 hockey. Pun intended.

I wasn't sure if I could post in here...thanks...it's good to keep things real and let people eat crow.

This dad bod didn't get here by itself LOL.

so what you just wanted attention? Why would anybody possibly care about how it makes you "feel"? People can literally feel your blood boil across the keyboard, losing your mind at everyone, because Ovechkin breaking the record is making you so angry.
He is not a girl. Not yet a woman.

Just give some time to grow up to the guy. He will understand how it looks and how poor was to act like that.

I think the best part of the whole Ovechkin saga is how so many haters in the media wrote him off as being "cooked" yet he still got to 895 and they are still coping.

Case in point:

All time goals leader despite playing in a low scoring era with the (currently) 3rd biggest individual trophy case despite playing against the largest field of players in history. And this guys putting him in a group with Chara for somewhere in the 20-30 range. This is the Canadian delusion that some people try to pretend doesn’t exist.

If his name was Albert Ovilier they’d now have a Canadian Big 5.

Funny how he reads that play and gets into an open area with enough time to get that shot off.

43 goals in 63 games at the age of 39 and 16 games missed with a broken fibula.

On ice IQ like all the greats is just on a different level. Anticipation to see what is coming & of course plenty of experience & he & Strome have a great understanding. Not just yet Backy-Ovy levels but not so bad. If he can sneak another 900 might be on before the end of this season but if I was Carbery I'd be more focused now on the POs.

I thought the same thing.

The goal against the Isles was sweet, but imagine if this goal was the record-breaking one. Talk about coming full circle.
It was obviously pretty fine as is but I concur that this goal as the record breaking one would've been absolutely poetic. Ovi should've skipped two games, though, to keep the GP at 1487 — and not that scoring the goal in this game would've been guaranteed, either. But to be talking about how to manufacture the perfect conditions and circumstances to a once-in-a-lifetime record breaking goal is a testament to how dependable of a scorer he's been in his 20th NHL season (would be 21th without the lockout).

Thanks for this. Only towards the end of the video it dawned on me that one of the hosts wasn't just some nerdy youtuber but one of the best Russian football players of all time, Andrei Arshavin.

My Russian skills are limited and I only understood 80-90 percent of the conversations but for one the interview confirms that Ovi knows about the regular season + playoffs goal record Gretzky still holds (would of course be incredibly condescending to assume he didn't know) and he didn't say it's unreachable.

What he didn't really comment per my understanding is the 1000 goal mark. I reckon that if the regular season was somehow like 110 games long Ovi could and would hang on to play one season after the next one to score goal #1000. That means I'm not bullish on Ovi scoring 104 goals thru 2.02 regular seasons even if he's currently showing a hint of his Benjamin Button side. As things stand though, the chase would very likely extend to the 2027-28 season and for someone soon to be in their forties that leaves an awful lot of grueling pro hockey still to be played. We'll see.

Why didn't NHL treat Ovechkin on the record breaking 896th goal with the same respect as they spent on the 895th goal.

NHL isn't like how they used to be, treating record breaking goal with a break in the game and celebration.
