Ovechkin Milestone Thread 2.0 - Passed some guy named Wayne, now NHL goalscoring leader (895)

As much as some want Ovy to aim for 1,000 I can't imagine him doing that. I think he's going to sit out 2 of the final 5 games this season, and since he's been on a heater with 5 in 4 games, I think he gets like 1 or 2 in the final 3 he'll play this season. So, end at 896/897. A 40 goal season next year say, he does hit 940 total. That's still 60 away.

For players, it's not so much playing the games that makes them retire, it's the off-season training and commitment to their craft that they no longer wish to do.

If you could give him the 116 games from the 2 work stoppages, that's like maybe 60 or 65 goals more he'd have now to get to him like 960. So, he'd have a shot at 1K with 1 more great year.

But, alas..

OV scored 7 in last 7, I wonder if he was aiming to beat G1 record in same number of games played, which needed exactly that pace. Number 1487 is as mind boggling as 895.
That is incredible determination under pressure anyway.
Refusing talk show invites indicates that he is now determined to go deep in playoffs, hopefully better result than last year. Definitely needs to skip couple of games out of those five. This 3-days break between games is also very important, just from psychological pov.

Got to give credit to Ovechkin's durability. He scored a career high 65 goals one year and one year Gretzky scored a ridiculous 92. There are about a dozen players that scored more than his 65 in a season, but Ovechkin's consistency over time was remarkable. Gretzky retired at 39 and Ovechkin at 39 kept scoring. I never thought that approaching 40 years old he would top 40 goals.

And I was there at the Garden for the last one. Right in front of me as I sat with my then 6 year old son behind the net.

I realized later once the playoffs started that he hadn't scored after that game.
I was at Maple Leaf Gardens for his last game! Literally 4-5 rows behind the net with Ron MacLean and Don Cherry doing the promo in front of us.

I remember Janet and a very young Paulina wearing glasses to the right of us. I'll never forget Walter Gretzky behind them and signing everything that came his way.

You could just tell that he was the nicest guy ever.

Naturally. But I don't think most informed hockey fans require heat maps to know that Ovechkin didn't score all of his goals from a single area on the ice. Equally, it's no unreasonable to offhandedly note that most of his goals were scored from his "office".

I'd say if percentages were ascribed to areas of the ice, around 50-55% of his goals have been scored from the left side and something like a 30-35%/15-20%, center/right breakdown.

Yeah, unfortunately there are too many uninformed hockey fans who think he is only capable of scoring from his office or into an empty net. Even 50% of his goals being outside his office represents 400+ goals.

The way I would characterize this is that Ovechkin is a great goalscorer from anywhere in the offensive zone, and he is practically automatic when he sets up in his office.

That Superman celebration has gotta be the eventual Ovi statue right?

That or a shot of him ripping one his left circle one timers.
I think the one-timer follow-through, hot stick celebration, the kiss to the heavens after a goal, or even more recent celly where kicks his leg up as he brings his arms down at the same. Any of the above would probably be better, but I still liked his superman/fountain celly. The kiss or the hot stick would be my two top choices.

Ovy was consistently productive from 20-40.

Wayne had 583 goals in 9 years with Edm. That is 65 goals per season average. That matches Ovy’s career best season. His next best was 56.

That’s fair.

I think a lot of takes forget (or simply weren’t watching) when Ovechkin broke into the league.

A couple of reminders for viewers that fall into that category.

He was scoring highlight reel goals on a bi-weekly basis. His favourite player (correct me if I’m mistaken) was Owen Nolan, a power forward with skill, and he played like it minus the fighting.

But for me, when Ovechkin scored a particular goal against Phoenix, even if he could be considered one dimensional, that one, skilled power forward Russian machine never breaks dimension was poised for well, greatness. It was the degree that was in question. And he’s answered it: Pantheon level for all time.

I’m glad he’s got his Cup. Loved the rivalry between him and Crosby. Think it’s sensational that he Dad-bods it in the offseason. Gretzky fueled up on Cokes and hot dogs. What’s not to love about hockey except for Brad Marchand and Gary Bettman?

Who knows? Maybe Washington’s got one more run in them? What an ending that would be.

Edited to say: And THAT goal he scored against Phoenix…Was when Gretzky was the Coyotes head coach no less.

Somehow Gretzky can be happy about this, but there remains subsection of people who legitimately can't let their misery go.

what makes you think the response "meh" is indicating rage, misery, or anything other than ...Meh?
How emotionally tied to Ovie and his accomplishments are you? Are you so soft a random stranger indicating indifference about Ovies new record is enough to make you feel attacked ?

Yes Ovie has the Goals record.. meh. Dude is a one dimensional player who has a great shot. and an entire team set up to give him one timers? ok.... awesome.. yay... There's still far better players than Ovie in the game today.

Gretzky 1487 games... 2857 points
Ovie 1487 games....1619 points...

Ovie has 56% of the points Gretzky has....

literally Half the player 99 was... which is what I said.

That is blatantly false.

Ovie is top 3 in hits during his generation.

Ovie is also top 10 in assists during his generation.

In 100 years of hockey history, he’s 41st all time in adjusted assists. If he plays for 2 more years he could easily be top 30.

He’s also #5 all time in adjusted points and will easily end his career top 10 all time in raw points.

So no, he’s not “one dimensional” nor has he ever been. Bizarre that you would post something that’s so demonstrably untrue.

mmmok.

He's also #27 on the most games played. so he's had a lot of games to get to those numbers.

he's #27 on the points per game and dropping as many active players are eclipsing him.

dude is a great player...but let's be honest...he spends a lot of time standing at the top of the circle waiting for others to do the work.

All those, who post on this thread, are emotionally attached to the Ovi’s goal scoring record. Reasons for emotional attachment could differ though.

And I find it disingenuous, when someone claims indifference but still makes an effort to post a “meh”. Of course, if an Ovi fan were chasing you down to ask for your opinion on this matter, this would have been a different story. But you came here at your own will. So much for the indifference.

I might know, though, the reason for this type of behavior - rules of the forum might not allow you to fully express your stand because it’s not hockey related.

Uh huh. And that’s how he accumulated the 3rd most hits in the past 20 years - by standing around? Puck carriers are just running into a stationary player? That’s your theory?

Just take the L dude. You parroted gibberish.
