He's still getting a ton of shot volume. If that starts to seriously dip (into the low-mid 200s) then I would worry, but he just had an unlucky year up until this point.

I do when I can and he floats around out there, on the PP he basically skates to the line and waits for others to gain the zone and floats around and then shoots, he is very uninvolved in the play but hey that's okay he is 38 years old and this is how it's going to end.

But the only goal here is for him to get the goal scoring record so why are people pretending that he is some sort of play driver or very good player still, he simply isn't and like I said almost every 38 year old in NHL history wasn't either.

Some quick napkin math here. Assuming that Ovi plays in all 31 remaining games the Caps have, and that he shoots his career avage (12.8%) and continues to get 3.48 shots/game. He will end up with 14 more goals this year. So 27 on the season.

That also doesn't change the fact he leads the team in points and PPG. He's still a good player (prob not 1st liner on a top team) that's gone through a noticeable decline in offense, as it should be given his age

But a few here are acting like he's done as a player, especially in the previous Ovi thread. Yet no one is saying that about the players he's outproducing on his own team. That tells me maybe people aren't looking at this through the most objective lense.

Yeah me and a close buddy who've travelled to see Ovechkin play in several stadiums were very much aware he's still reliable on his own team which is the only thing that should matter when others are calling for imminent retirements.

Again, the historical precedent for legends to walk away is at least 1 if not 2 consecutive seasons of significantly diminished returns on the team. And Gretzky didn't walk away before that happened to him, nor did guys like Sakic, Yzerman or Selanne. Others were able to have resurgent campaigns in their late 30s and early 40s.

And hell, do we dare ignore the immortal Joe Pavelski?

Like when I described his actual play and asked people to watch and the only retort was from MJ with the detailed anyaslsis of "wrong"

On the first part a lot of that is because he is given extremely elite and sheltered usage and sure the rest of the team isn't that great.

To the second part sure he isn't really a first liner any more but he is there in Washington given his reputation and the focus on getting the goals record.

The problem here is pretty clear though it's the usage that doesn't match the results and still no change in that usage.

I think what is says is that no one is really talking about those players because the usage results question doesn't come up with them.

That being said plenty of people have spoken about how crappy Kuz has been and literally no one is defending him.

Maybe the difference there speaks to some unequal treatment?

PP turret has always been a lazy argument for the people that use it. Being 65th all time in assists is pretty good for a guy gets zero credit for being a playmaker. Even if you believe the detractors and he is the most selfish, one dimensional shoot first guy that gets assists by bouncing the puck off the goalie he is 65th all time. Assist rebounds vs secondary assists. likely a lot of the time the same difference.
