My bad. That season was actually Gretzky's 6th season leading the Oilers in both goals and points. How so?
NHL.com says the opposite, that Gretzky won 73 to 71?

I cannot see anyone matching Ovechkin on this. It has to be a combination of:
- one really good offensive player who outclasses EVERYbody else on the team for 10 years
- a goalscorer who also racks up assists
- a not-very-good team offensively, such that one player can dominate even with trough seasons (like Ovie's 32 goal season)
matnor made this thread on the # of times a player led his team in points, goals, and assists in total (not consecutive): http://hfboards.mandatory.com/showthread.php?t=1580739. It's accurate through 2012-13.
Players who led their team in goals and points 8 or more times each (non-consecutive):
Gretzky: 19 times for points, 8 times for goals
Howe: 17 times for points, 15 times for goals
Sundin: 13 times for points, 11 times for goals
Jagr: 12 times for points, 10 times for goals
Dionne: 12 times for points, 8 times for goals
Hawerchuk: 12 times for points, 8 times for goals
Sakic: 12 times for points, 10 times for goals
Iginla: 11 times for points, 10 times for goals
Lemieux: 11 times for points, 10 times for goals
Esposito: 10 times for points, 11 times for goals
Oveckin: 10 times for points, 10 times for goals
Brett Hull: 9 times for points, 11 times for goals
Selanne: 8 times for points, 8 times for goals
I would look at these players if you want to figure out who is closest to Ovechkin.
Were Yashin's 9 time in points and 7 times leading his team in goals consecutive?
No they weren't.Were Yashin's 9 time in points and 7 times leading his team in goals consecutive?
It has been. In post 21 and 27, respectively. I think he was throwing it out there to see if it could be corroborated better. I started to do a check in order to produce a table, but I've given up for the time being.Iginla is still the best out of these guys, wth 7 consecutive. So Morenz and Iginla with 7 is probably the closest to Ovechkin.
I'm surprised that this hasn't been raised before.
No they weren't.

Ahh. In that case, yeah, I was surprised too.I meant the fact that Ovechkin has broken this record three times before it was brought up on the HOH board. It seems like something someone would have kept track of.
I'm not sure, but I counted 11 times for Dale Hawerchuk (consecutive times in leading one's team in points). That started in Winnipeg in 1981-82 and extending until 1991-92 in Buffalo. I counted nine times for Howe, and seven for Denis Savard. The answer is no for Bobby Hull as well.
Gordie Howe holds the record for most consecutive years leading his team in goals with 11 (49-50 to 59-60). Bossy and Ovechkin have 10. Bobby Hull also had 10, but was tied with Mikita in one of those seasons.
As mentioned earlier, Gretzky holds the record for points with 13.
As far as I can tell, Ovechkin is the only player to lead his team in both goals and points for 10 straight seasons.
Jarome Iginla had a stretch from 00-01 to 11-12 where he led Calgary in points all 11 years, and led in goals in 10 of them.
huge bump here, hopefully nobody gets upset....
Ovechkin has now lead his team in goals and points in the same season FOURTEEN times. Tied with Dylan Strome as of today in both stats, may perhaps end the season at FIFTEEN times.
