Ovechkin for Laine (aka Laine is the next "Ovechkin")

I remember some rabid posters saying Laine would finish with more career goals than Ovechkin.

They based it on Laine having 80 goals before turning 20 years old as Ovechkin started his NHL career at 20 years old.

He was certainly electric for a brief time and then fell off an absolute cliff. I get the early excitement because I was among them, thinking that finally, we had another true goal scoring threat. Seeing him score in bunches as he did, so often and so early, was exciting.

November 2018. He scored 18 goals in just 12 games that month. He had three hatricks. He had five multi-goal games. He had 11 goals during a 4 game stretch. He potted 5 goals in one game on just 5 shots. Two games later, he scored his 100th and 101st goal. It was a beautiful thing.

That kind of start buys one some time, but we’re approaching seven full years since that run. The goodwill generated should have run out about four years ago. When he finally had another good stretch early this after joining Montreal in December, 8 goals in 9 games, I didn’t get the fervor because I just knew his 11 goals in 35 games over the past few months was the peak of what he might do.

You know who would make this trade? The hockey professor, that's who.

If Laine appeared a little bit later or earlier - he never had so much attention like he had in his first years.
He appeared in NHL in worst Ovechkin season combined with probably most dramatic posseason elimination,
But next year Ovechkin came back, and even Laine`s magic november in 2018 doesn`t change anything.
