Ok, lets play with the thought that Ovi wins the Cup this season with the Caps, after beating Gretzky's goal record. He will be close to being done motivationwise after that.

Caps will lose him in any case after next season as he goes to Russia. They have had a goal scoring king forever, they will want someone to replace Ovi, the shot, they need someone who can be the shot after Ovi.

Laine is that guy. And imagine Ovi knowing that he can be the mentor of the next superstar Russian in Habs, Ivan Demidov.

Ovi and Laine both have 1 year left in contract. Basically identical cap hits.

What I propose is a trade of Ovechkin for Laine, at the latest during next TDL.

I would have posted this at the Trade board but I dont seem to have the credentials to post there.

Discuss the suggestion, or just the very probable goal of Caps, of acquiring Laine to replace Ovi.

No way Washington would ship out Ovechkin with 6 weeks left in his farewell tour for a player that has been utterly disappointing on the ice. I'm happy for Laine that he could come back to the league and still play at a decent level, but I honestly think Ovechkin might be better than Laine in 4 or 5 years if he were to stay in the NHL.

There's also no replacing OV on the power play, just like Tampa couldn't really replace Stamkos' one timer even if Guentzel happens to be the more productive guy this year. It would be a mistake thinking that you could slot in a guy who is similar in play style but nowhere near as good and expect similar results.

So, in this scenario, Ovie becomes the greatest goal scorer of all time, and wins a 2nd Cup in a Caps jersey. And you think Washington rewards him for this by trading him?

No way, Jose.

Ovechkin is a Cap for his whole NHL career. Of that there is no doubt. And of all the crazy things that could ever happen to possibly make some WSH executives consider changing that, getting Laine in a trade isn't even close to enough of a reason.

Laine to Washington? Maybe. To put him in Ovie's place after Ovie retires? Less likely, but maybe. Trading them for each other? Not a chance.

In that case, why don't the Caps just sign Laine when he becomes a free agent (assuming that they had any interest in him)?

20 years old, and not even 2.5 seasons into his career. 101 goals in his first 179 games.

6.5 years later and just two weeks away from turning 27. 122 goals in 345 games since then.

When does the obsession end?
