OP, IIRC the reason Lecavalier didn't finish out his career with the Lightning is because the league blocked an Yzerman magic trick to use a compliance buyout on him, have Toronto sign him for cheap, and then have him traded to us.

Yeah I checked and couldn't find anywhere where it explicitly said they couldn't trade back for him, but it also doesn't explicitly say that a team couldn't buy-out and re-sign a player either and that seems to be a generally agreed on rule. I suspect an attempt at either would very quickly be labeled cap circumvention by the league and then you've just bought out and lost that player.

Here’s my question.

If Arizona or Philly gets to sign arguably one of the greatest scorers to ever play the game at 3 million a year, why in God’s name are they trading Ovi back to Washington for anything less than a king’s ransom?

I imagine it would have to involve a level of collusion high enough to break the rules, but WSH would have to say "hey dudes we'll give you x assets if you partake in this cap saving deal with us", and if the other team didn't agree to the terms ahead of time the Caps simply wouldn't buy Ovechkin out in the first place.

I like the creativity but I guarantee if they managed to do it the league would lay down some smack on the teams involved.

Didn't Ottawa do this with Alfredsson? In 2009, they bought him out and resigned him according to CapFriendly.

I'm too lazy to check if this has been changed, I think for a compliance buyout a team couldn't resign the player.

First idea: why don't all team just sign players to league minimum and then offer them big dollar consulting contracts on the side. No more cap worries ever. Imagine Tavares signing with your team for 1 million and then geting a consulting contract for 8 years at 20 million. Technically it's not a playing contract sooo...

Perfect. I wonder how many draft picks that team will get taken away from them and how much that team will be fined?

He is owed 30M on his current contract. He signs an extension for 3 additional years and for 18M which would be a 6M AAV. I would call market value for him, but the money is paid over 6 years resulting in a 3M AAV. Ovie wants to win a Stanley Cup and this will save his team 3.7M in Cap Space to bring in other pieces to make that happen.

I don't think you will find a single Flyers fan who can't live with this trade ... They are finally getting an elite goalie. Capitals also have several promising goalie prospects.
- Pay a premium (picks) and get rid of Orpik with one year left on his 5.5M contract.

Also, Ovechkin is worse off under this because he will be able to sign another relatively big contract after his current contract ends if he still wants to play.
