One of the greatest to ever play the game. As a hockey fan, I feel privileged to have watched him play for his entire career.

Something that doesn't gets mentioned enough is his durability. 10 years in the league and he's missed only a small handful of games.

Supposedly players decline after 30 so Ovi will be lucky if he even scores 10 goals next year.

In truth, I actually can see him at the top or at least near it by the time he retires.

He's played 760 out of 786 (96.7%) possible regular season games in his career, some of which were missed due to deaths in the family. That's absurd for someone who gives and receives hits like he does.

Plus his suspension. Amazing, really.

Considering he's like a ****in bull I have no doubt of seeing a longevity similar to Jagr's.

That being said I think he's got about 5-6 more years of elite 45+ goal years and will start to steadily decline afterwards, still putting up more than 30 goals annually. Especially considering Backstrom is only 27 and will still be there to feed him great passes

Just wanted to say: I love the list in the OP. Full of all-time greats. And Mike Knuble.

Certainly one of the stranger stats out there.

Not mention he is a guy who just loves playing hockey. He loves the game itself and you just see so much enjoyment when he's out there playing (minus the Oates years  )

So Ovechkin is turning 30 before next season starts. Many here on HF Boards think that a hockey player is basically done after turning 30. How will Ovechkin measure up against what other superstars have done after turning 30? Here's a list of what some superstars have done after turning 30:

1. Gordie Howe 415 goals
2. John Bycuk 374 goals
3. Teemu Selanne 338 goals
4. Brett Hull 328 goals
5. Mark Messier 309 goals
6. Mike Gartner 297 goals
7. Marcel Dionne 293 goals
8. Brendan Shanahan 276 goals
9. Daniel Alfredsson 274 goals
10. Mark Recchi 267 goals
11. Dave Andreychuk 267 goals
12. Jaromir Jagr 265 goals (and counting...)
13. Joe Sakic 250 goals
14. Ron Francis 245 goals
15. Dino Ciccarelli 237 goals
16. Luc Robitaille 234 goals
17. Mike Knuble 228 goals
18. Mats Sundin 217 goals
19. Stan Mikita 217 goals
20. Steve Yzerman 211 goals
21. Sergei Fedorov 201 goals
22. Mario Lemieux 196 goals
23. Wayne Grezky 188 goals
24. Keith Tkachuk 178 goals
25. Jari Kurri 127 goals
26. Olli Jokinen 106 goals (and hopefully still counting...)
27. Pavel Bure 54 goals
28. Peter Forsberg 51 goals
29. Eric Lindros 27 goals
30. Alex Ovechkin 0 goals (at the moment...)

He hit 53 last year while leading the league in hit posts. With the addition of Oshie on that top line, I honestly think he has a shot at 60 this coming year. That line will be dominant 5 v 5.

I think post 30 Ovechkin is going to score some goals.

Big time reach, I know.

He has nowhere near the devotion to conditioning and healthy lifestyle choices that Jagr has/had.

Conditioning means piss all. Genetics are the biggest factor. I laugh at all these gym nerds in the modern era. Fitness does not translate into success, in sports such as Hockey, which require 70% skill, 30% effort. Kessel and Ovi always get a bum rap for this fitness level, yet many fail to understand that it's their genetic makeup to be thick, and not cut. Being thick means your durable anyway.

Kovalev: 138g + 12 playoff goals after 30/lockout.

Ovi can probably play for another decade. He'll be smart enough to change his game to suit his abilities when the body starts giving.
