Olympics: OV on Team Canada?

Dumb question. Absolutely. An elite goal scorer, and you can trust he'd have a coaching staff utilize him properly on Team Canada.

You can damn well bet his reputation would be better if he was Canadian, too.

I honestly don't see how one of the greatest players in the modern NHL is going to make team Canada worse, whoever does is out to lunch.

Yet 40% of voters say that he makes the team worse. Shows the anti-russian bias among posters on this site.

I've got to go with worse. What made Canada so formidable was that they had 14 forwards buying in to playing hard at both ends of the ice. I'm just not convinced Ovechkin would.
Read my mind. I think with proper coaching OV could morph into a player that buys in and learns to play a 200 foot game. But for a short tournament, I think he would actually make TC worse.

Shows no such thing, country of origin has nothing to do with it.

It absolutely does. No Canadian superstar player gets the amount of hate that Ovechkin does on here.

It's the same question as does Crosby make Team Russia better, but different results due to bias.

I think that is kind of why people are asking the question of whether he would actually have a negative impact on Team Canada.

Ovechkin is a player who constantly "needs to be utilized properly". Even his biggest fans say that. He went into the tank for close to 3 seasons because he "wasn't being utilized properly", according to his fans.

To me, that is somewhat placing Ovechkin above a team and a team's gameplan. A team must revolve its gameplan around Ovechkin whenever he is on the ice in order for him to be effective. He must be "utilized properly" by the team so he can produce and be effective.

The team and coaching staff must adapt their styles and gamplans to suit Ovechkin, rather than the other way around. He seemingly is unable or unwilling to adapt to a team. The team must adapt to him.

I think this reality is why people wonder if he would have made Team Canada worse, despite his gaudy goal totals.

That's your opinion because I'm sure you realize such a statement is completely subjective. And I'm sure you realize that Crosby gets his fair share of criticism and outright hatred on these forums.

I think the result would be different because Crosby is simply the better all round player.

Ovie would make team Canada better
But
Only because team Canada and it's leaders would make ovie better on a much bigger scale

This is dumb. Put up the poll for datsuyk to see how it has nothing to do with that.

It's about commitment to winning. Putting personal accomplishments/stats behind team goals. Ovie has never shown he's willing/able to do that.

After seeing how this Team Canada was constructed, I am not sure there would be a place for a player like Ovechkin. People say he just needs good coaching. How many coaches does he need to get fired or have resign before HE starts taking some of the blame with you people?

Let's keep looking for that elusive coach that will finally get him to play responsibly. Why any coach would take a job with the Caps is beyond me. If you tell the star player what to do, he calls you a "fat ****" and YOU get fired, but everyone says it is your fault for not making him change.

Great players buy in, not sell out.

This is why I continue to criticize this guy. Brilliant hockey skills, no direction, and everyone keeps making excuses for him. The Caps do the same thing as his fans. So he never changes.

It is a tragedy, because he could be the best player in the world, still. Instead he is a joke. A goal scoring machine with nothing else in his game and a perennial loser no matter where he goes.

I bet I actually have more of his best interest at heart than his so-called "fans" do.

No other player has ever gotten angry at his coach. I'm sure Ovechkin is the only one.:sarcasm:

-Caps keep hiring inexperienced coaches
-Ovechkin and Boudreau said they have no problems with each other
-Cap franchise has been overall mishandled. This is Ovechkin's fault, apparently.

I'm sure you care so much about Ovechkin, just about everything you've ever posted about him is a critical shot. Oh and then lets compare him to some other "Better human being" player...who are you Damien Cox?

Yes he makes the team better. The one thing the Canadian team was missing was a sniper who could finish passes and Ovechkin is the best in the world at that, with Stamkos and probably Kessel a close 2nd and 3rd currently. Also Canadian coaches could reel him in a bit and get him to play a more team game.

Can anyone honestly see Ovechkin backchecking hard, going into the corners, and being content with 35-40 second shifts?

This is the same guy who called his coach a "fat ****" because he wasn't put out in the last minute of a close game.

Also Canadian coaches could reel him in a bit and get him to play a more team game.

Could they succeed in doing that? Or would they try, fail, and then have him end up being a toxic influence in the room?

At every level there is always that one player who has all the talent in the world but just doesn't seem to put it all together and win for some reason or another. Whether it's coaching, the players around him, or his own attitude, something just isn't clicking. Most the time when those players finally join a team that knows how to win and have a coach who's been there and done that they seem to finally put it together and play more of a team game. I'm not sure if this would work for Ovi but if he was on team canada and saw how they play as a team and play for each other he may buy into it and finally become a well rounded player.

Does that mean Kunitz is better than Ovi?
It means he fits in better with the team Canada concept. That's something people don't seem to get, TC was built to be the ultimate team and it worked to perfection. Ovechkin is not the kind of player to buy into such a system, at least he's put forth some pretty compelling evidence that we is unwilling to.
It's one of the most leading stats there is without context.
I agree, but OV is a -17 and the Caps as a team are what a -4? The guy is a defensive liability and I don't even need to see stats to know that, just watch him play.
