Out of Town Thread - New Year’s 2025 Edition

I see you're doing selective reading.

If a prospect tells you he won't come over to play for your team, it will influence your decision process. The fact that you refuse to acknowledge that is mind-boggling.
Did Michkov say that?

Allegedly preferred to not go somewhere is not the same as threatening to never sign with an NHL team. I hope this distinction doesn’t mind-boggle you too much because it is central to the point.

So you're being purposefully obtuse.
You mean pedantic, and no I’m not. It’s a fact that some of you want to build a narrative and it is not grounded in FACTS. Don’t get annoyed when someone calls it out because facts should matter.

There is no evidence that Michkov said he’d refuse to play somewhere. There is no evidence that Philadelphia or Michkov did anything illegal, unethical, or against the spirit of the NHL draft. There are no sources or citations to even suggest this.

I hope you can acknowledge these statements as they are and agree to move on. You don’t need to call out WeThreeKings the next time he/she lies about Michkov, I won’t request that of you, but please respect those who don’t like fake narratives and smears.

I think the most obvious/common sense answer is:

Michkov made it clear that Philly was his preferred destination and told every other team it would be a 3+ year wait. This isn't the same as refusing to ever sign with a team, just that the team would have had to wait 3 years, maybe more, to bring him over - which is what everyone already thought on draft day.

No idea why you're putting Philadelphia in there, this is about Michkov. There is also nothing illegal about what he did. Every prospect can tell teams they don't want to be drafted by them or that they won't sign with them.

You draft value. He doesn't want to come? You change his mind. He doesn't? You draft him anyway. He stays in the KHL till he is shipped to a team he likes. He has to like more than one team. The guy destroys the KHL. You put teams in competition. And you get a return accordingly. Who I believe has the potential (but that's my belief) to be more than what we got.

Pretending that he didn't want to come to Montreal is great to cope. Frankly, we don't know for sure. What I do know though and what I don't understand.....it's why it's solely a Montreal thing. Geez, at this point, he could very well be the best player out of the draft.....so....why wouldn't Chicago, Anaheim, San Jose, Columbus be blamed?

Obviously, right now, the only reason Montreal is the focus is because nobody cares about Arizona and because our player is the only one who isn't playing in the league. So let's hope he joins the Habs next year he does well so we could move past this.

I will always believe it's a mistake to not have taken him based on the fact that we went needs instead of BPA. Habs in 2022 went BPA in 62 instead of needs. I mean, Ty Nelson a RD was available.....Yet, seems to me we didn't do too bad....not sure why we didn't do it in 2023....

Agreed. I would have drafted him and taken the chance that within 3 years I would be able to convince a Russian to come to Montreal.

I think what hurt our reputation is how our management treated Russians in the 2 years leading up to Michkov's draft. Maybe Montreal would have been his top choice if we didn't perform a full organizational purge of Russians in 2022/23

Obtuse means acting stupid. I’m focusing on the facts which inconvenient your little narrative building attempt. Cite your sources or move on.

When I watch Michkov, I'm always like wtv.

Another point scoring forward would be nice, but I like the way the D is developing and if Reinbacher hits, that d-core would look pretty nasty. And then Demidov is coming in.
Thing is....who is that top 6 you are so excited about?
Hutson-Guhle
Reinbacher-?
?-?

Matheson, Struble, Mailloux, Xhekaj, Carrier.....I think people are overevaluating our D big time. We are far away to be competent there.

Add the fact that we have injury issues for Guhle and Reinbacher.....I don't think we HAD to pick Reinbacher there. He wasn't the missing piece of the puzzle. We have ways to go. Don't be surprised if we keep our 2 picks this year that both are d-men....

IMO our LD are set for a long time:

Hutson
Guhle
Struble
Xhekaj
Engstrom
Trudeau
Protz

We needed help on RD and they went for the best in the draft. Still need another prime asset at this position.

Reinbacher
Carrier
Konyushkov

What made Demidov happy to be in Montreal? Why Konyushkov in the 4th round as far as it is...if russians don't want to come....why waste a pick? What made him specifically not want to come here? Do we still own Sobolov, Gordin and Kostenko? I have no idea where the anti-Russian sentiment came as far as we are concerned...But most importantly...what did the Flyers do so he'd want to go there? Before Michkov draft....Flyers hadn't pick 1 single Russian since 2017. And for the ones before that, no success stories there. Their best russian success story...1994...Alexander Selivanov...lol

Hutson clearly can be move to the right. Guhle has injury issues. And the others are from No5 to fringe. You lose Guhle, You have Struble in your top 4. You can't win with that.

As far as the depth is also concern....not sure why people say this. Let say you are right, Hutson and Guhle. Top 4 on LD. And the others...aren't doing the job on the right....you know that you won't keep them for the long run. They'll ask a trade. Engstrom could move back to Europe etc.

On RD, Carrier is exposed 'cause he's not at his right chair....but you hope that the day you win it all, he's not on your top 4.

Point is this....if you REALLY need a RD....and you have a Michkov to trade in your back pocket.....chances are you'd get a better RD...that ON TOP of it would have been more proven than a pick. I would NEVER be oppose in trading Michkov. In the end, we traded Michkov at the draft...for a pick to hopefully flourishes. I would have trade Michkov 1, 2, 3 years later for a PLAYER more proven.

We’re in good shape too so this cope is unnecessary and reeks of bitterness.
If we build for the longer run.....Laine's contract ends next year. Though you add Demidov. And you have Newhook to center a 2nd line (though he's doing fine right now....to which extent is he a permanent No2 C...I doubt it). Find a C that could have center Michkov and Demidov....and NOBODY would have ever wanted if we should have drafted Reinbacher....

We are looking much better than ever. For quite a long time now. But we are not there yet. Still need an answer in net. Still need quality on D. Still need to find a No2 C and what do we do with Laine....if he goes, need another top 6 winger.
