Again, it all goes back to the Tavares signing. They should've asked him to take a discount.

When Tavares signed there are articles saying he took a hometown discount. Both the New York Islanders and San Jose offered more, reportedly. It was reported San Jose offered him a 7 year $91 million contract. But what it do is it set the bar for the contracts that were after Tavares signed (mainly Matthews and Marner who got a lot).

I actually think Shanahan did a good job for the most part. His fatal flaw was his continuously running it back. At some point he should’ve realized that he needed to make changes.

San Jose was offering Tavares $13 million. $11 million for a UFA 27 year old Tavares was the “discount” at the time. Like you said, that contract opened the lane for their RFA’s coming off entry level deals to rob the bank. And what made it worse is Tavares wasn’t a need for them, depth and defence was as they already had Kadri, but they decided to go the route of embarrassment of riches for top 6 forwards and here we are seven years later.

And then I think 'don't think we get by the Cats tho'
But then I remember we went 4-0 vs them this year so maybe we could made it a series too!

Can’t stand Carolina or Florida. But a fan of the way panthers play. Happy to see Carolina, their bandwagon fans and sociopath owner getting dummied.
