HF Habs: Out of Town Thread: 2025 Playoff edition

That was their cue to blow it up but they just keep insisting on themselves.

That's what you get when you sink like 50% of your cap into 4 lazy narcissists lol

Ever check these stats?

Some offensive zone time rankings

2024-25 regular season:

1 Carolina
2 Florida
4th Edmonton

2023-24 regular season:

1 Carolina
2 Florida
5th Edmonton
9th Dallas

Seems like one of the stats that translates to success, some other interesting numbers at that site.

I expected Svechnikov to be a star by now. I guess he is a 60 point player, nothing more.

I have a feeling Svech would explode offensively elsewhere. Players on this team rarely build up production year-to-year. Rod tends to over-blend lines. It would always drive me crazy in Fantasy Hockey when Rod would split up his hot scoring line.

The Leafs are such an interesting use case. In theory it should've worked. But they were all the same type of player and Marner is such an entitled personality. They needed a different mix.

More than just that though they really f***ed up the contract situation. I would've signed Tavares but it turned out to be disastrous for them. Not only was he more of what they had but he took every last dollar and then Dubas let the others run over him with their demands. That never should've happened. But once it did it really hamstrung the Leafs.

The whole idea was to build a team that could score it's way out of their problems. And of course... they couldn't score.

I mentioned it being a bad mix - it's not just that - although it's is true - I think they had the wrong personalities as well. Rocket Richard was an absolute killer. Doug Gilmour had that same killer instinct. You see it with Connor McDavid... that fire. None of the Leaf players have it. Nobody wants to lead the way. They're all afraid.

I think Matthews might've figured it out but he's been hampered by injuries for the past few years. That meant they were really dependent on Marner and he's the absolute worst guy to rely on. All skill no heart. It's just not enough.

The weirdest thing is having most hockey fans knowing that these guys were one dimensional, all they had was skills and Shanahan and his GM never making an effort to break that core to bring in more fire and determination. They were so full of themselves that they thought their plan would work that they'd rather lose than being proven wrong. Look at what the Panthers accomplished by bringing in Tkachuk. Completely changed their culture. Imagine the Leafs having Tkachuk instead of Marner.

Just got back. Wtf did I miss?! Marchand and Ghost were about to have a lightsaber battle?

Ohhhh Ghost intentionally shot it at March. That's garbage. DON'T MAKE ME DEFEND MARCHAND LMAO

Man imagine if Rantanen stayed with the canes.

They would have lost in 5 instead of getting swept.

It should've worked better than it has. In theory they SHOULD be able to score their way out of some problems.

The biggest issue. The one thing that killed them consistently. It wasn't goaltending, defense, secondary scoring... their prime scorers simply didn't score. Nylander is the only one with any kind of consistency. The other three turned into useless bums. Matthews I give a bit of a pass to over the past few years because he simply wasn't healthy. But as others have pointed out, he did nothing before that...

For whatever reason, that team can't get it done when it matters. Personally I think it starts with Marner. He's toxic. Entitled, not accountable, blames the media and fans... it's never his fault. And he sucks so hard. He has to go. And unless Tavares takes a steep discount, he needs to be booted as well. Then they can start from there. But it's not going to be easy. They have no picks. They don't have many prospects... they'll have to use the UFA market and that means overpaying. They're not in a good spot right now.
