Yeah he's not going back

The moment they asked him to waive his NMC to go to Carolina for Rantanen, it was evident their intent was to move on from Marner. And I think that's when Mitch made his mind up there that he was going to leave. I think the only thing that would make him want to stay was if Leafs made it deep in the playoffs.

I've always liked yall, appreciate the condolences.

And the honest "scouting report"

He sounds like the exact opposite kind of GM I would want
Bergs is good GM, will work well with Roy. He got us to finals, he is big on character in playoffs. Weber, Gallagher, Corey Perry, Price, Toffoli, Danault. The core of this team is his, Suzuki, Caufield, Guhle, Monty, etc...

But he was incapable of assembling a complete team and incapable of negotiating contracts. If he learned from his mistakes or has someone else negotiate contracts he might be decent.

I am going to save my MB dissertation for the islanders board if the team hires him as GM. I don't feel like rehashing it here again (we moved on since 2021-22). I completely agree with you on contract negotiation. Gets way too personal for him (crying during the Gallagher contract talks, Markov blowup, etc).

But it really depends what they're looking for. If they need a GM to retool on the fly and are willing to give him a few years to restructure the core and the pieces around it, he didn't do a bad job by any stretch with his retool between 2018 summer and 2020 fall. A huge problem in 2012 was Molson and his desire to compete ASAP. He wasn't interested in doing what the habs are currently in the middle of. Which is probably why McGuire wasn't hired.

With all that said, it'd be a huge mistake for the Isles to hire him

Friedman said on his latest 32 Thoughts, with Rogers now having 75% ownership and recent layoffs in the company, they’re expected to reduce management levels, eliminating standalone Pres of Hockey Ops position and having GM reporting directly to Scott Pelley, Pres MLSE

I don't mind this at all as Ronald Corey was essentially that. He was not a hockey guy, he was a Molson representative, essentially. I guess they could hire Roberts as GM. And let him surround himself with sharp minds.

You’d think a guy like Shanahan would have built a tougher team…

IKR? Shanahan was such a beast on the ice. I might even have seen him saliva coming from his mouth in a few cases of how mad he was. But I noticed a change when I saw him work for Players Safety in the NHL. He had Bettman's ear and suddenly he seemed like he became this "distinguished gentleman". He became too civilized. And that explains what happened with the Leafs. I mean we can say what we want about Cam Neely but he stayed the same and was able to instill into the Bruins a never say die attitude leading to a cup and a few finals.

The Leafs are such an interesting use case. In theory it should've worked. But they were all the same type of player and Marner is such an entitled personality. They needed a different mix.

More than just that though they really f***ed up the contract situation. I would've signed Tavares but it turned out to be disastrous for them. Not only was he more of what they had but he took every last dollar and then Dubas let the others run over him with their demands. That never should've happened. But once it did it really hamstrung the Leafs.

The whole idea was to build a team that could score it's way out of their problems. And of course... they couldn't score.

I mentioned it being a bad mix - it's not just that - although it's is true - I think they had the wrong personalities as well. Rocket Richard was an absolute killer. Doug Gilmour had that same killer instinct. You see it with Connor McDavid... that fire. None of the Leaf players have it. Nobody wants to lead the way. They're all afraid.

I think Matthews might've figured it out but he's been hampered by injuries for the past few years. That meant they were really dependent on Marner and he's the absolute worst guy to rely on. All skill no heart. It's just not enough.
