HF Habs: Out of Town Thread: 2025 Playoff edition

Somewhat lost in all the core-4 talk is how outstanding Florida’s team game was in game 7. The pressure, the system, the coaching.

While true that you need the right players to buy in, it’s also true that it’s a whole lot tougher to play a game when your team is getting their ass kicked like that.

It's an almost impossible team to beat in a 4 out of 7 series, that's for sure. You can take some games, but on the long run getting the 4 you need is a real challenge.

That's a different level of frustration if you're an Avs fan. How do you keep losing game 7s with a core like that? But they won a cup at least.

This Leafs team is basically making history. Very unique. I don't think you'd see another team like that. I pray the Habs never go through that.
The cup is what matters. You can lose a bunch of game 7s but if you at least get a cup out of it it heals all wounds.

Sure. And if the Leafs had put up a fight I think their fans would’ve been more forgiving. But to lay down and die like that in not one game but two? Not acceptable.

I love WS! He told us two years ago how awful Bob is when he took over for Lyon in the 1st round series against the Bruins. Since then he he has won 9 playoff series (could be 10 after tonight), lost only one, got a Cup ring and secured his spot in the Hall of Fame. :D
Man Philly literally dumping a hall of famer goalie has to be the most Philly trade ever. And thinking Carter Hart could replace him... Roh roh

They're amazing. The only way I saw them losing is because of how much hockey they've played the last two seasons. I really thought it was gonna take a toll on them but they've fought through it. Don't know how much they have left in tank though.

Funny they were in a similar spot to the Leafs a few years ago, talented but could not get over the hump. The changes they made to their core with the Tkachuk and Bennett trades were brilliant and also this year with Marchand. Added a new dimension to that team much like the Leafs need to do. IMO they are not far off, they just the right tweeks.

If you prefer Marner to Mathews that is your prerogative and who am I to tell you who you should prefer.

I think both of them are poor playoff performers who consistently disappear in big games. I prefer Mathews because he at least brings some level of physicality and does not whine and cry like Marner does. The only reason that I could justify keeping Marner over Mathews is Mathews health concerns as 2 out of the last 3 seasons he was severely limited by an upper body injury that derailed his entire season from training camp until elimination and there certainly appears to be a real possibility that he may have a chronic issue.

Mathews was unquestionably better than Marner over the last two elimination games despite clearly being injured. Marner had egregious turnovers in both games and was not involved in puck battles nearly to the same extent as Mathews. Combine this with Marner's childish antics on the bench as well as yelling at his teammates like a D and D player having a hissy fit.

I think we agree that both players have serious issues and personally, I don't want either one with the cap hit that they command.

Except it is Matthews who is always injured and missed a lot of time this year. It was Marner & Nylander who led the team. The team plays better when Matthews is out.

While Marner might not always bring the offense, he's consistently far better defensively than any of the other forwards, including Knies.

In game 6, Marner stopped several offensive forays by Florida and made a great play to set up Matthews goal.

Nylander is Kucherov-lite in the sense that he's a neutral zone cherry picker and is incredibly soft defensively. Difference is he's also incredibly soft everywhere else on the ice too whereas Kucherov battles in those places.

Leafs need to shake the core-4 not because they can't win, but I think the playoff failures have become this mental obstacle that creates more pressure than the actual market pressure.

You need to bring in a couple of new core guys that don't have the same baggage. I am convinced that the need to overcome the second round, game 7 hurdle takes up too much mental space in the core-4s mind that it is a distraction.

Something even as silly as Kaprizov or Larkin for Marner, or Matthews for Robert Thomas.

It seems nuts, but you need to bring in players with no baggage.

They need a Huberdeau for Tkachuk shake up. Hell maybe they need to bring in Brady.

Good luck getting anything north of a 2nd pick for Marner’s UFA rights.
