HF Habs: Out of Town Thread: 2025 Playoff edition

I really hope kent hughes is watching the leafs and panthers.....I dont want a team that is that gutless and turtling. The only time they step up is when its contract negotiating time.
We don't have one now, so we're nicely on our way.

The Habs with a lot of players tasting playoff hockey for the first time, showed more fight in 5 games than the Leafs do year after year after year. Habs didn't back down or fold, to the point Carbery said it was not a really a 4-1 series because Habs weren't an easy team to play against.

Tkachuk - slaf
Barkov - Suzuki
Reinhart - Demidov
Verhaeghe - CC
Rodrigues - Newhook
Bennett - nobody

They aren’t far off.
2C will be important, obviously.
Some of the others - Slaf, Demi - just have to develop and bring the compete level. I’m sure they will.

Reinhart and Vehaeghe’s compete levels weren’t as high earlier in their careers. They aren’t overly physical now but they keep coming after you. They play a very determined game. Experience and perhaps playing for Maurice or with Bennett/Tkachuk.

And arguably that series could have easily went to game 6 or 7 with some bounces our way. I think the Leafs provide a good example of what Hughes and Gorton are trying to avoid, they don't want a very top heavy talent driven team. They want a talented team that competes hard. The former gets you to the playoffs but the later gives you through it.

Woooh amigo, Roy definitely upset the nodicks in 93. I remember many favored Quebec, on top of falling behind by 2. Same with Rags in 86.
Neither of those were upsets. They were evenly matched clubs.

Montreal vs Boston in 71 is a massive upset.
Montreal vs Boston in 2014 is a massive upset.

In both those cases we beat cup favourites with huge differences in the standings.

In '93, Montreal and Quebec were very close in the standings. Quebec was an up and coming team but hadn't found themselves yet. Only two point difference in the standings. The Canadiens were a 102 point team that year. Hardly an upset.

The Rangers were 11 points behind us in the standings. We were the favourites in that series.

Patrick Roy deserves every accolade for those cup runs. He was nothing short of phenomenal. But we got really lucky with the path we had. We didn't have to face the Oliers in 86 or the Pens in 93. We had a lot of luck.

Considering how average Roy was in the regular (93) season he really turned up his game come playoff time.

He had a good year but not great. That spring the Gazette ran a poll and the majority of people voted that Roy should be traded... People forget how bad he was in the playoffs in a lot of those years. He was mostly terrible against the Bruins. It was so bad that Harry Sinden used to make "Patrick Roy in the playoffs" jokes.

Great goalie. But he spent much of his time here with multiple HOFers, multiple Selke winners, multiple Norris winners. He had the best defensive team in the league in front of him for the bulk of his career with Montreal.

That does not take away his play. He was absolutely incredible. He deserves all those awards. But if you flip him and Price, Price would've had those same awards. Price would've won multiple cups and Roy wouldn't have any. There's a huge chasm between the clubs those two were on.

Dryden had the best teams of all but that wasn't the case in 71. He beat two of the best teams in the league - one of the best teams ever assembled. Won the Smythe before winning rookie of the year. And he placed second in Hart voting the following season. He's a really underrated player in my opinion but it's understandable. It's the same thing with Vasilevsky in Tampa. Great goalie behind a great team. But I don't get how people dismiss him because of those teams and then turn around and pretend that Roy wasn't in a very similar situation. He played his whole career behind fabulous clubs.

I predicted Dallas, Edmonton, TB and Carolina.
I didn't think Edmonton was going anywhere this year. Just seemed to be off.

Maybe they were just saving it for the playoffs.

Seriously, McDavid and Drai put up Gretzky/Lemieux type numbers. They are two of the best playoff performers ever. It's amazing what they've done over the years.

After the first two games against the Nords. He was bad the first two games of the playoffs and then people in Quebec started to say he was finsihed and then he became a rock.

Regardless of what one thinks of Steve, it is crazy to think between the Leafs two prior series wins, you had kid Leafs fans basically become adults and start families. That level of mediocrity would not be tolerated very long in Montreal.

I just can't understand how they just turn into a pumpkin when it matters.

They really looked like a different club this year. And honestly, no shame in losing to Florida. Panthers are the best team in the league. It's undertstandable if you can't beat them because they're the defending champs.

But to lose like that? To not show up? Man....

They HAVE to show up in game 6. If for nothing else but to show some pride.

It wouldn't? I believe we are on year 32 of medioctiry. Granted, we have more series wins for sure. But I want the cup and a perennial contender.

While some really really bad people would say one was more obvious than the other....can't believe that the same day, we would have witness a Leafs blowout and Oilers eliminating Vegas....Insane day.

Somehow, I don't think it's over for the Leafs...but they might very well be able to win in Florida and lose game 7....lol.

But Oilers? With tht D and goaltending? Insane.
