The funny thing is that Newhook is considerably better than Howden was at the same age in just about every facet of the game...

he'd have been eaten alive on this board with his play at 23-24-25.
Not sure I said I'd replace Newhook by him...just as not sure we would have thought Howden would have been a candidate to center a 2nd line either...Howden on a bottom 6 is just like a Heineman most likely could be...and nobody would bash Heineman...

Leafs barely in second gear and already up 2-0. Took care of business at home now they go on the road and play stress free hockey. Gonna be a quick one!

Fair.
Though Howden was drafted for his top 6 potential, never lived up to it and is now, at 27, settling in to his niche as a reliable bottom 6 player. Rangers fans were largely disappointed in his inability to live up to his draft potential after he landed there as a big piece in the Miller/McDonough trade.

I bet that if Newhook hasn't established himself as a solid top 6 forward by 27, he'll be considered an elite bottom 6 player... Better than what Howden is currently for the Knights.

Heineman plays 10min/night and is in his rookie season at 23. Newhook, 24, is a far superior player & contributor, and gets bashed incessantly.

My point is simply that the lack of patience with development of young players is mostly ungrounded. Many, if not most, players don't hit their full stride until their mid 20's. Teams that are able/willing to endure the growing pains and/or do a good job of pro scouting to pick up assets dismissed as "busts" by many an ill informed fan, reap the benefits.

We've had our share of those. BargainBin's biggest strength was perhaps that when you consider the additions of Petry, Danault, Byron & Kulak...all of whom were significantly better in their 25-30 years than they were "on track" to be in their early 20's.

Neely probably just doesn't know how to use computers and is learning for the first time that their draft picks have been bad.

But to be honest it's more a development and impatience issue.

Their 2014 draft got Pasta, Donato, Heinen, and Bjork with only 5 picks in the draft. Donato and Heinen were traded.

2015 is hilarious but they still got DeBrusk, Carlo, Vladar and Lauzon. 8/10 picks saw NHL time.

2016, 6 picks, 5 saw NHL time. Got McAvoy, Frederic, and Lindgren.

2017, 3 nhlers in 6 picks. Swayman the only notable one.

The next few drafts they're basically walking in without picks, including multiple years with no firsts. Still managed one NHL per draft.

Half these guys were traded away before being given a chance. You can't expect to walk into a draft with four picks and no first rounder and build a competitive team. Even then they did so and got Poitras. Last year they did the same except a first instead of a second and whiffed on Letourneau.

Even then, the sheer number of traded picks means missing a single pick kills the entire draft. It's a GM issue more than a scouting issue. Every team misses multiple times every draft.

But that's pretty common though. Types of players that are bashed in a place, and do better elsewhere 'cause they might develop late. Slaf will get bashed....until he becomes Tage Thompson 5 years after being drafted.

As far as Newhook is concerned...it's a question of role. You'd take Newhook, make him kill PK and have him center a 3rd line, bashing should be reduced. I mean Newhook with Armia and Heineman will not be bashed for not producing. Newhook with Laine and Demidov will. Same Newhook. Different assignments and expectations.

Howden was still picked 27th. And if I remember correctly, haven't went back to watch, I don't think he was pencilled top 6. Remember he had skating issues...but they were mostly saying he was as safe as can be...bottom 6 players at worst.
