Jonathan Kovacevic leads the Devils with a +13 rating and has been rock solid for them. Another fun fact is that during six professional seasons, he has always been in the plus column, even when he played for us, lol. He plays on a minimum-wage NHL contract, wish we had a guy like that lol.
I must eat my hat here, I really never thought he would matter much.

Rejoice, he's UFA this summer. Lets get him a stiff raise with a good term!

Jordan Harris not even being able to crack a poor Columbus D is pretty indicative our coaching staff and pro scouts don't have the best idea about talent. Meanwhile kovacevic is a bonafide top 4 d, wonder if he makes it to free agency.

We've had too many guys skipping AHL time to develop on the fly and it's not been working well for many of them.
No one here said Kovacevic is a top 4 D when partnered properly but he was the only experienced depth we had on RD.
It turns out Kovacevic could have been a natural replacement for Savard but no one claimed that either.

However I agree having put all our eggs in the Reinbacher Mailloux basket before July 1st was a strategic error.
Having watched Laval down the stretch I still thought Reinbacher who was better than Mailloux needed some finishing.
We had plenty of built in flexibility on that left side but moving that experience with Barron still unproven. :help:

This is a mirage driven by UFA contract year while playing on a good team - some sucker will fall for this anomaly season, overpay for his UFA services & regret it

Some of us were practically crucified for saying this (5000 times, in increasingly combative and argumentative tones) :sarcasm:
You were dead wrong at the time and even ran from the forum instead of eating crow. Entire threads were unreadable of whining. This victim complex while you dance that Slaf is in a small rough patch has gotten really old.

Calgary beating Florida is a nice surprise. The dream is still alive.

Florida has not scored a goal in their last 2 games. Those were against the Canucks who have had their problems on home ice and now against Calgary.

Their next 2 games are against the oilers who seem to be playing well now and the wild.

The Montreal Canadiens are looking to not acquire Brandon Saad ;)

One of the most overrated player of the last 15 yeras or so imo.

I don't know the cap situation for the Devils but if they have room I could easily see him getting something in the 3 million per year range. Yes he is on a better team but the guy has been solid wherever he played and as long as his skating remains up to par he can be effective into his mid 30's.

They have very little margin currently and I doubt they extend Kovacevic before he turns free agent. Not without dumping some contracts like Tatar, Bastian, Lazar or Allen.

if a team offers term like 5-6 years, pretty sure Kova signs at a reasonable hit.

With Nemec and Casey as prospect i would honestly be surprised if they sign him. Kova will need to be very very very team friendly in his ask for them to sign him. They already have Hamilton, Pesce, Dillon and Siegenthaler signed long term all for 3.4 millions+ contract (all having more playoffs experience). If they are worse on the ice than Kova then they become untradeable outside of Siegenthaler because of their contract. They also need to resign Luke Hughes next summer and he's having a good season. One thing people forget about Kova is he has 0 experience in playoffs and he's gonna be 28 next season. Personally i'd be very afraid of signing him multiple years at 3+ if i was a GM. Would not be the first time we see a Cinderalla season before a new contract by an unestablished player in his late 20ies just to see that player revert to his old self one-ish season after signing. Mike Kempny comes to my mind. Paul Byron.

Thanks for the info. He will get paid come July, playoff experience aside, he plays the right side and is steady defensively, certainly not flashy but effective. A team will pay him based on his position and his size and attributes as a player.
