Ovechkin heating up. 5 game goal streak.
Now just 60 goals back of passing of Wayno.

Should be able to get another 12-15 by end of this year no?

They will roll Ovechkin out in a wheelchair if they can get away with it. Caps organization, Ovechkin and fans aren't even really trying to hide it: the only thing they care about is feeding him the record.

I find it pathetic, personally.

I completely agree. It’s become pretty obvious that Ovi is going downhill right now. For example his slapper is no longer powerful. Nonetheless, Caps and the league will try to force the record to happen even if it takes another 3 years.

Ya I was pumped last year to see him break it but after reflecting, as you said, it's just the only thing they're clinging too as they likely miss playoffs again.

Nothing against Ovi of course but ya it'll be the last drawn out feather in his cap on a pretty decent career.

With 60 to go, you got to think it may take until 2025-26 at this point? I know Gretzky will say he's happy Ovi will break it but just shows how great Wayno was because he shut it down when he was 38 years old and 1487 games.

Ovi gonna be pushing 41 and will need around 1600 games to pass him.

People will say "Gretzky played in an era of terrible goalies" and other stuff like that, but I think many of them never watched the guy play.

Also don't appreciate how much better sticks are these days, how much less physical the game can be, and how many brutal injuries Gretzky suffered as guys went out on the ice shift after shift with the sole intent of ending his career.

Wayne also had more assists than Ovi will have total points .

Don't get me wrong, Ovechkin is a great player. All-timer, in many respects. But I think hanging on as a shell of himself for the record demeans him.
I personally don't mind.

It's not like he's no longer NHL calibre. He's obviously nowhere close to being the player he once was, but he still leads his team in points. It's not too different than Jagr's twilight run. Although 40s Jagr I'd argue is better than Ovi right now, but point is they are/were still solid contributors.

I don't really have too much thought on Ovi and the record.

If the Caps want to keep on bringing him out to break it, cool.
I like when records are broken.

Sort of like Emmitt Smith breaking the all time rushing record. He wasn't in his prime but still was a decent back. Back in 02, that was the only positive thing to watch for regarding the Cowboys.

His goal scoring decline over 1 year is impressive though.

Even at the time, I thought Emmitt Smith's decision to hold on just to break the record, and then make a huge production out of it -- changing jerseys every quarter so that he could say he had four game worn jerseys to auction / keep -- was really pathetic.

Then again, part of why that was so pathetic was that Barry Sanders had decided to retire rather than compile stats on a garbage team, even though he was still one of the best players in the league and was going to smash the record in only ten seasons. If Barry had decided to keep playing to get records, he'd have retired with like 22,000 yards.

LA started 16-4-4...

They were all over BOS the first 7 mins of this game and then BOS score twice in 25 seconds half way through the 1st period.

Something is seriously off with the Kings

EDIT - LA get lucky and 2nd BOS goal was called back on goaltending interference.
