Out of all active players who would you say is most similar to Fedorov?

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

We’re going through a period where there’s a serious lack elite two-way forwards in the league so Barkov becomes the natural comparison to any, but realistically I don’t think anyone has a similar game right now. He was a pretty unique blend of speed, skill and defensive ability.

Erik Karlsson...pre Achilles injury.

Can't honestly think of anyone close with the same speed, edge-work, puck handling, and shot. But that's as close as I could get with the current player base.

Puck handling of a prime patrick kane
Speed close to mcdavid
D of a younger kopitar
Hockey sense of barkov
I have to say federov's puck handling was second to none
I watched and was awed by federov. I think he was probably the best ive ever seen- so no, no one player comes close

Argument can be made that Fedorov was the most complete player of all time. He won the Selke and Hart the same year, a feat that has not been done before or after that. Scott Bowman said he could've been an all star defenseman. Gretzky and Yzerman described him as the best player in the NHL at the start of 90s. Bourque and Lemieux gave him credit for his dominance. He also won the fastest skater and hardest slapshot all star competitions, ten years apart.

It's hard to think of a player who is elite at both defense and offence. In terms of playing style I think MacKinnon comes close: fast and dominates the offensive zone. But MacK really isn't that good at defending? Barkov is great at defense, but he isn't as fast as Fedorov.

Is there even a player who plays like him?

Eichel couldnt fit in Fedorov's socks let alone skates. He is a weird generational talent that will somehow not be remembered as one of the greatest. Was lucky to grow up watching him.

His outlier season was awesome indeed. It’s interesting though how big part it is of his overall esteem/legacy whereas concerning some other players a suggested lack of consistency with elite level seasons is an argument against them.

As often with these things I’m sure it’s not to a great extent the same people who sais A that sais B, but it’s very clear with Fedorov how little emphasis there is on how much of outliers his best and top 2-3 seasons were for him.

Maybe because it’s a bad look to be the negative one/party pooper and I don’t want to be that either haha 😆 It’s just such an obvious standout concerning Fedorov.

These are my top four. If I had to pick one, I'd have to say Barkov is the standout.
  • Barzal matches Fedorov in speed and puck control, but lags in two-way defensive IQ.
  • Barkov is the closest overall match regarding two-way dominance, positional IQ, and solid offensive output.
  • Matthews excels as a scoring threat, with balanced playmaking and improving defense.
  • Eichel is a hybrid: fast, strong offensively, and decent defensively, but lacking the complete Fedorov-level versatility.

Important to remember that the window where Fedorov really dominated only lasted about 3 years. That’s a big distinction from guys like McDavid, Kucherov, etc.
people love to romanticize him based on those three years. throughout the dead puck era he was basically a 30 goal/70 point guy with great defense (tho he only got stray selke votes). in term of modern comparables, he may have looked like mackinnon out there but he produced more like toews.
