Out of all active players who would you say is most similar to Fedorov?

Argument can be made that Fedorov was the most complete player of all time. He won the Selke and Hart the same year, a feat that has not been done before or after that. Scott Bowman said he could've been an all star defenseman. Gretzky and Yzerman described him as the best player in the NHL at the start of 90s. Bourque and Lemieux gave him credit for his dominance. He also won the fastest skater and hardest slapshot all star competitions, ten years apart.

It's hard to think of a player who is elite at both defense and offence. In terms of playing style I think MacKinnon comes close: fast and dominates the offensive zone. But MacK really isn't that good at defending? Barkov is great at defense, but he isn't as fast as Fedorov.

Is there even a player who plays like him?

The unique thing about Federov is that a lot of the Hart winners aren't usually that good at defense.

You'd have to start from the Selke and work out from there, which would make Barkov the closest.
Barkov comes to my mind as well, he is a totally different type of player though which shows how unique Federov was.

MacKinnon is a terrible comparison tbh, he is no finesse player at all.
Federov's game was build around smartness not around physical parameters. Drai and Kucherov are very smart player, which think the game at elite level. But both are no good comparison either. Maybe Kucherov a little more than Drai. So maybe take Barkov on defense and Kucherov for the offensive part of the game if you want to name current players?

Yeah, it would have to be a hybrid.

Bergeron was also kind of there in the sense that he was no linebacker - not afraid of contact by any means, but he defended with smarts and skill.

But of course, he's not active anymore (I feel old), and he wasn't as skilled as Federov.

He was an extremely rare combination of elite offensive and defensive skill, so it's hard to find a current comparable. Winning the Hart and Selke in the same season is just insane.

I don’t think he played at all like MacKinnon, Barkov, or Suzuki

It’s hard to think of a good comparison for him. Eichel if he was a Selke-contender?

I didn’t want to make the homer looking suggestion; glad someone beat me to Eichel.

Fedorov’s a bit of a freak; I can’t think of a clean comparable.

I watch Eichel play and I actually think of a more physical/slightly less cerebral Patrice Bergeron. There isn’t a center in the league I’d put on defense expecting a result anything like prime Fedorov.

MacKinnon came to mind mainly when talking about dominating offensive zone. When people say Fedorov dominated the ice I think they mean his ability to cover large areas fast while maintaining the puck. MacKinnon has similar ability but he is in a sense more physical force so maybe that's what you meant.

Draisaitl imo is even farther away than MacK because he is slower and is more like Matthews type of finisher/sniper who is good at positioning and doing slick passes.

Fedorov was a great skater and that played a big part in his dominance. I don't see much of that type of athleticism in Draisaitl who looks more like a productive version of Rantanen. Kucherov is closer in when it comes to skating but I feel like he doesnt nail the dominating large parts of ice part.
