Our first Powerplay unit (must) change long before the playoffs

  • Xenforo Cloud has upgraded us to version 2.3.6. Please report any issues you experience.
He's a powerplay specialist making $11m a year, agreed no way Thornton and Simmonds should be out there over him. He's too classy to say anything but you KNOW it's gotta bother him inside too

Why the f*** are Simmonds and Thornton always out there

And why do Matthews and Marner only get 1 minute

The definition of insanity is trying the same f***ing thing over and over expecting a different result. I guess we can all agree that whoever coaches our PP is incredibly stupid.

Im hoping its an epic conspiracy and they have actually found a formula in practice that they know will work, so they're saving it for the first round and playoffs so nobody can do homework on it.

If not. I REALLY don't get what they are doing using Thorton and Simmonds as much or more than Marner and Matty and Tavares is just underutilized.

If I'm going to make one small tweak to the PP it would be to put Matthews on the LW and have Marner run the RW wall with the freedom to go behind the net. Assuming Rielly is the LD "puck distributor" his main flaw is he has a real problem moving the puck to his right hand side either to the RD or the RW. So let's make life easier for him and give him the easy outlet down to Matthews on his dominant side. At least you have a trigger man in a spot.

It's just continual ridiculous decision making for the most part. They need to simplify.

Also, load up 1 effing unit please and only start the 2nd unit if the 1st is overly exhausted.

If only we actually had a defenceman who can take a slapper from the blueline. Rielly is no threat from up there.

It has nothing to do with talent, its has to do with being predictable. The simple solution is to stop using set plays that can be seen from a mile away.

Load up PP1 with talent for 2 full minutes: Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Tavares, Rielly

Once they fail, the next PP, put grinders on for a full 2 minutes to dump, chase, screen/crash the net: PP2: Hyman, Spezza, Simmonds, Robertson/Foligno, Muzzin/Brodie
No set play, just pepper the net with shots from all sides, and crash for the rebound. Its been a ****** month already and they still haven't tried this yet.

Willing to bet PP2 becomes successful while PP1 continues to fail. They need to treat the PP no different than 5 on 5.

What's more embarrassing is there are no elite Pking teams in our division. We should easily be lighting it up on the powerplay.

Are they in denial or what? So frustrating theyre still running the same crap.

Someone needs to show Keefe that 3% stat TSN made us cry with. That 3% goes to zero when it's time for our usual Atlantic division friends.

That's true sire. TAVARES our captain should, always, always be on the first unit. Like the italians accent that always. I love that there. Other ways is dumb. Mattthews and marner are a guaranteed. But don't change it, ever. Put the same guys on like the bergeron line does. Every year. And win it. Hard.

Its overcoaching. Anytime Matthews is on the ice the rest of the team looks to him for the shot. Simple solution, take him (and Tavares who also stands around waiting for the shot) off PP1. It will force them to not look for a shooter.

If you must, try: Marner, Spezza, Hyman, Kerfoot, Muzzin/Brodie

ANYTHING ELSE FFS. Draw names out of a hat.

Rielly has been struggling a bit on the PP but hes our best option.

Main thing is we need to stack the top unit...Enough of Joe/Simmonds out with Matthews and Marner.

Go back to Willy JT Marner Matthews Rielly... Let Willy play up high and Marner downlow and have them switch between low/high. The rotations and puck movement from Willy to Marner downlow will open up lanes to JT and Matthews for one timers...Its simple really. Also Willy can rip it from up high so let him play higher.

They need to open the lanes with movement and start one timing the damn puck. Every other team does it but us. At least Muzzin has a couple times over the last few games but none others do or try. At beginning of season both Mathews and Nylander were teeing up, and it was very effective.

Reilly I'm sorry has been not good out there. No imagination, he never hits the nets and cannot one time (or doesn't).

Rielly is still a great offenive defenseman, hes very dynamic and a terrific skater. The only person in our system that could be better than Rielly there is Sandin IMO.

Predictable.
Something a full year against the same team will do.
Unfortunately, it seems we have a hard time being the team that adapts ; event hough we have one of the most potent offenses in the league.

I'll say it now, if teams fear our PP (like they should) we become the next level team we've hoped for.

When Nylander comes back I have an idea:

Rielly
Matthews - Tavares - Marner
Nylander

Seemed to work fine last year
Yep leave those guys out there until they figure it out. There’s no reason for them not to, they are too skilled to not be able to get it done.

Yup the Marner to Nylander movement is what creates this goal. The Lightning also have to respect Tavares in the slot and the pass to Matthews across the crease

I agree he's a great passer and is very mobile. Also started handling the puck like a grenade recently and I'm not sure why. Just doesn't seem as confident with the puck this year. Also, really lacks a shooting threat/presence. He could definitely be a 1PPQB but he won't be the guy they should be teeing up one timers to, which means unless he plays half-wall we won't have a point shot threat with him out there, which kind of sucks.

Foligno
Marner - Galchenyuk - Matthews
Rielly

Jumbo/Spezza/Simmonds
Nylander - Hyman - Tavares
Muzzin

I'm hoping that they're playing 'possum, and come playoff time a new bag of tricks will blow the opposition away.

Wishful thinking, I know.

What does everyone have with Joe Thornton?

He doesn't even belong on PP2.

Guy can't skate the puck in the zone, bobbles/turns it over at the first bit of pressure.

We don't need him.

Their best chance spark/catalyze their powerplay is to load up 1 unit with as much skill/firepower as possible. Screw trying to look for the greatest sum of production or greatest fit between units, because over a long period of time they have done absolutely nothing; their only goal right now should be to find a way to score, actually be good there for once.

They need to find a way to get 1 unit going before even thinking about the overall production of 2.

Nylander

Matthews - Tavares - Marner

Rielly/Brodie

It's probably not going to work right away, but just keep sending them out there even if they fail over and over again; it will become great again.

When it's been this bad, don't try and start 2 fires, focus on at least getting one going first.

We need more patience and movement on the PP. We have the skill to keep possession until we wear out or move opposing players around.

Put Brodie and Dermott on the PP and run your best offensive stars.
