Ottawa wins a game Series 3-1 MTL.

I think the Habs played their best game without Pacioretty. Says a lot about how stagnant the go-to lineup is.

Without Pacioretty, I feel like they realize they all need to contribute at scoring, because Pacioretty won't be there to score an easy one.

Then suddenly, with him in the line-up, players take it easy because they don't feel the pressure.

Also, Pacioretty doesn't dangle and doesn't use his body that much, so in the playoffs, that's a disaster. The opposite team has an easy time to suppress him.

I'd really like to know WHY Therrien gives DD all the opportunities that he does. No shot for Eller. None for Galchenyuk anymore. Plekanec rarely. I don't get why it always has to be DD.

"DD is bad, this is why Patches is bad"

Then explain why every single time Pacioretty has the puck (so far this series), he plays it as if it was a pre-season game? No rush, no intensity, nothing. Is he still hurt? I don't know, but to think DD is the reason why Pacioretty sucks lately is ********.

This is a fair question, but it begs another. Why then did that line get so much ice time?

Most of this board has been saying for years that DD-Patch is a mirage during the regular season... the duo is hot garbage in the playoffs because they're incredibly easy to shutdown; even by a team as ****** defensively as Ottawa. Imagine this duo when they go against teams with good defensemen in Tampa, NYR, or of the top dogs in the West... It's a shame because Da System looked great in game 1 without this duo. Therrien's stubbornness regarding this duo is his downfall and has been for the past 3 years.

Max is a sniper. A sniper needs to play with big skilled guys who can create room for him. At this point, Eller is the optimal centre for him. They'd form an incredible possession duo together, and frankly you can put any RW next to them and it'll be a great line. You can start that line in the dzone and count on them to skate the puck into the offensive zone and apply constant pressure.

Then there's Galchenyuk stuck in no man's land playing LW with Plek. I love all three of those forwards, and they've had their moments, but Galchenyuk's skillset is stifled at that position. This kid has so much more to offer... He still has his moments, but he's half the player he was when they moved him to centre.

Bright spot of the game: Pateryn getting cut by a visor at the blueline, then absolutely nailing a Senator in the crease before heading off for stitches. Tough as nails.

This. Exactly this. That line was a 3rd line with PAP on it and magically Pac gets swapped on to it and they play 6 1/2 more minutes a game, as though there is no other option.
That said, Pac was the worst player on that line tonight.

It's getting rather concerning. It's the same as last year. DD, in general, is hustling and playing hard but his physical limitations means he can't do much by himself. More worrisome is that Patches, just like last year, seems to be floating out there with seemingly no hustle and desire. At this point, DD may actually produce more with Prust and Gally than Patches. Or even Eller for that matter.
On the other hand, Patches probably needs Pleks (or Galch) to produce?

Whatever the case, DD needs someone to create space for him, hence give him bigger or more physical wingers, or better yet, put him on the 3rd line.

Patches needs to actually increase his heart rate above 30 bpm...
We aren't going far if Patches stays at his sedentary state.

It just doesn't make sense. Pacioretty wants to be captain of the team. He says all the right things to the media. He hustles his ass off for 82 games. Scores nearly 40 goals and leads the league in +/- only to give up in the playoffs? Sorry that doesn't sound like someone who floats. Something doesn't smell right. He needs new linemates or something.

This powerplay is abysmal. It actually gives the opponents offensive players some rest. I dont get how nobody was fired yet. How can you go 1 /423432 against the freaking senators when you have 2 top offensive defensemen and a top 5 goal scorer? this is freaking riduculous

Better to lose a 1-0 game in a series you're statistically nearly assured to win than sweep a team, ride in on a hotstreak in the second round and lose your first game there. Team now knows they can get beat by anyone, time to improve going forward. This isn't the worst way or scenario to lose a game.
Come playoff time, final score means squat. Its who gets to 4 wins faster.

Does he really hustle his ass off? I mean, he has a HUGE talent at scoring goals because he's an incredible sniper. In the playoffs though, being an intense player is much more useful because the games are far more physical. That's why you see players like Weise, Eller, Bourque, Gallagher or Subban succeeding in the playoffs.

When Desharnais is covered, Pacioretty is basically useless on himself. A true #1 winger in the playoffs should be dominant with the puck. Being a "mere" sniper won't get you far. The opposite team has days and days to study the other team, so it's much easier for them to develop a strategy at covering Pacioretty/Desharnais, and the opposite players are much more alert.

I wished he played with much more intensity...

Having a team on the brink of a loss/elimination only to ease up completely? Where have I seen this before?

Oh right, every Therrien team ever.

Or it could be the coach doesn't give anyone else a chance to score...

The final 10 or so mins of the game, he rolled patch/dd more than anyone else. Really. Come on now.

If you call going to the net 4 times in 4 games playing hard, then what to you call what Gallagher does every game? Going to hell?

DD only hustles if there is 1 dman back and he's the closest player to our net. Other than that he skates nonchalantly going either way.

I don't see what any of you see in him.

You know who hustles and plays hard? Prust, Subban, Gallagher, Petry, Eller, Weise, Markov, Beaulieu and Price. Everyone else floats majority of the game and still gets rewarded.

What a horrid effort. I said it before the sens scored, win or lose, i'm not happy with the effort. Sloppy, unforced errors in all three zones. No exit strategy defensively, passive and perimeter play offensively. Putrid Powerplay. You can't go 0-9 over a span of two critical games and expect to deserve to win.

DD, Pleks and mitchel all below 50%, eller above 70% this game. That would've helped on the powerplay, although the effort and system was also lacking once we did get possession. I can't for the life of me understand why Therrien insists on taking away the point shots by having subban and markov play on the wrong side.

I dont know about the rest of you guys, but this series could easily be 3-1 sens. We've gotten worse every game.

The issue with Pacioretty is that he creates momentum only when he scores or when he's on the rush. When he doesn't score, he's pretty much non-existent on the ice.

When was the last you saw Pacioretty having AMAZING shifts without scoring a goal? Going from coast-to-coast, dangling some players? Laying the big hit? Being a HUGE treat on the powerplay?

He's really good at receiving a pass and putting it in the net, or causing turnovers and scoring on the rush... but in the offensive zone, when the opposite team is settled, other than being ready for the perfect pass, he's boring as ****.

which is why he needs to play with a center who isn't pushed off the puck every time.

My point is that he needs to start creating chances by himself. This is the playoffs, not the regular season. If all he does is wait for the puck, then Desharnais or not, the opposite team will have a easy time cover him. I mean, hey, just cover the center and Pacioretty is suddenly useless! Yay!

This why I suspect, that even though the Habs will likely win game 5 of the series at home, it will come to a very embarrassing end in Round 2.
Not to mention that the playoffs should be exciting and entertaining. The games are too boring to watch. I just read the GDT thread as it goes along, for good or ill.

Been saying this ever since the captaincy became vacant. He shrinks in tough times, and the pushing of him to become C is definitely about why Subban should not have it more than why Pacioretty should.

Oh and DD 16 mins, Elller 12 - DA RECORD.

The worst part about this loss is we get to hear what sens fans have to say for two more days. They never shut up. They're a lot worse than us.
