Ottawa 67s 2024-25 Season Thread, Part III

We really need to let everything play out and see what happens int he offseason. So many changes could happen that alter the landscape of the 67’s. Although, if Cameron is back, I am not sure Ekberg is a fit on this team. Like Uronen, he would get traded if there isn’t’ a spot for him or he decides to make a trade request. Boyd will trade guys if they aren’t happy. Going back to Europe would likely be a Plan “B” in the unlikely scenario where he requests a trade after Cameron officially returns

That is what I said: between now and the OHL draft, we are going to know what the plan is either by OSEG and Boyd's actions or inactions.

Ekberg not making the draft would be the worst thing that could happen to this team on a Euro basis. Uronen then Ekberg wanting out and them keeping Korbler says so much about the org that players are going to want to stay away.

Anyway as we know the only thing that is left is to see how DC screws things up by actually fighting to market the playoffs. LOL

I forgot about the Oshawa deal. Yes, I had heard that one too.

From what I was able to piece together, Pinelli wasn’t keen on Brantford. But, he would go it he had to. Then the OA deadline had passed. I believe it was supposed to be Mayich and Pinelli and when Brantford didn’t get that deal done, they shifted focus to a different OA D-Man. That nixed the Brantford deal. Not sure if there was a picks only option but it sounded like Pinelli didn’t want to go there anyway. I’m pretty sure that’s when Boyd and Pinelli had a conversation and both of them said they weren’t keen on the options so they decided to fold the tent and not do something neither of them really wanted. But, I think that discussion happened the day before. I think both sides preferred to give an extra day to get the Kitchener deal done. That is just speculation on my part though.
Here is what I heard that happened. On the weekend before the deadline, a deal was done with Barrie. Pinelli got cold feet and blocked it. Barrie moved on to Romani. Then a deal was done with Brantford. Pinelli had no interest. He wanted Oshawa. Oshawa had already got their Dman, and didnt have the assets that Ottawa wanted. Once Boyd told the Pinelli camp that Oshawa was out, Pinelli said he would go to Barrie, but it was too late, they made their deal and were no longer interested.

Sounds about right. The only difference was that I thought Barrie made the deal with NB as their Plan “A.” It explains the timing. If that deal was their Plan “A” then they could have made that deal as early as Jan 1. It also explains a lot of the rumblings about Barrie.

I had also heard that Pinelli wanted Kitchener but then the rangers either wouldn’t piece together an appropriate package or a player wouldn’t waive to go to Ottawa. Not sure but it sounded like Pinelli thought he was going to Kitchener a couple days before the deadline.

Either way, I hope he is content with any decision he has made. Regrets suck. He will at least get to play in the AHL sooner.

I heard he wanted Kitchener, but the feeling wasnt mutual with the Rangers and talks didnt really get off the ground. Not sure on that one though.

The offseason will be interesting to see if they can get any USHL, BCHL and/or US Dev Team players to commit. That would change the outlook for 25-26 quickly.

There are three categories fo those players. Category #1 are the mature players they had drafted. Guys like Cole McKinney and Asher Barnett. Those guys will be very tough to sign but they would both be difference makers for sure. Category #2 are the younger guys like Vandenberg. He’d be a good signing but I am not sure how much of an immediate impact he’d have on next seaosn. I think he’d be more of a 2026-27 impact. Category #3 are the proverbial “free agents.” These are guys that are not protected by any OHL clubs. They are likely more mature. Maybe their first year in the NCAA as an 18 year old didn’t’ go very well and they look at the OHL as a fresh restart. Play in the OHL for a season and get back to the NCAA when they are a year or two older and better positioned to be successful. That is a wildcard category. This is the category that could change the fortunes of the 67’s overnight, especially if they can nail down two 19 year old centres.
