It is referred to as opportunity cost. Every decision made affects something else.

If the priority is $$$$ in the short term then he shouldn’t have even entertained trading anyone at all. Clearly that was not the goal. He was actively shopping players. So Inreally don’t think short term $$$ was a factor at all.

WRT the WJHC, I think the result has left a bad taste in the mouths of the casual fan. I really don’t think we can expect a significant boost there. I could understand if the team was successful and Pinelli made a huge contribution, there would undoubtedly be a boost but this result was worst case scenario. In fact, I could argue no firing Dave Cameron right now is costing the team money and reputation damage.

Seems to me Boyd didn't make all the moves he could have, exactly to save his job, because it seems his incentive / objectives from OSEG are revenue based. Why else is Pinelli still here? Mews wanted out and pushed the issue with the NCAA angle, so Boyd had no choice to take whatever he could. Pinnelli in the very least would have some loyalty to Cameron, so it made more sense to keep him.

Not good for Boyd to attract player. Still, As far a a boost financially for OSEG, TD Place was filled with fans for pre-tournament Canada games, and then filled for secondary team games. Didn't matter to them how Canada fared...

We took a bag of pucks for Stonehouse, because the plan to move McKenzie also failed miserably when he didn't perform in a market already saturated with good OA players and goalies. Stonehouse ended being then the only option to move out.

3> The plan was to package Pinelli and Mayich for an ‘08 player. THAT fell through. Boyd couldn’t get a deal done with Brantford in time so Brantford went with Budnick. No one was taking on MacKenzie and we didn’t have a backup option. Boyd did well finding a last minute landing spot for Stonehouse.

Sorry, but this is the last convo I will make on the deadline. I don’t really want to justify my stance on it. I am reasonably sure, with all the back alley info I have that I am accurate at least 90%. I am not sure what Boyd turned down but we should be reasonably certain that NTC’s played a significant hand in the failure both ways (67’s and opponent). Boyd’s inability to at least secure an earlier picks based deal is inexcusable. He rolled the dice and lost, big time. There is no excuse when a 48 goal scorer with a good attitude and hard worker hits the market that he is not worth at least 2x(2-3-4) picks. I refuse to believe teams with a solid picks cabinet weren’t willing to give that.

I was referring to this year’s draft- 2025. Sudbury has two second rounders and somehow Ottawa didn’t end up with either despite trading the leading D scorer in the league!

Well, this season is a write off. No chance NB passes Ottawa in the standings after the exodus they managed to strategically execute. So, Ottawa is pretty much cemented in 8th and will likely be good enough to finish ahead of four teams in the Western Conference and two teams in the eastern conference which means we likely pick around 7th. Considering the disaster this year ha snow turned into, a 7th overall pick has to be scored as a big loss.

What does the team look like next year?

Barlas (OA) - Foster (OA) - Ekberg
Amidovski - Dever (OA) - Kelly
Yanni - Whitehead - Kingwell
Houben - Bowes - Houben

We could sub out one of the OA forwards and keep Horner and use him on RD.

The 67s under Boyd's management lack direction and identity. Looking at the next few seasons, they are a rudderless ship, not nearly strong enough to finish in the upper half of the conference nor, after today's bag fumbling by Boyd, sufficiently committed to a rebuild. I, and I think most fans, can get behind a rebuilding team if management actually puts the effort into communicating the course of action with the fans, commits to making the necessary transactions to rebuild the team and, most importantly, hires an appropriate coach for the job - a coach that young players are enthusiastic to play for and see themselves developing under. I don't think Cameron fits that description.

The team is very small and will get pushed around, particularly up-front. They lack jam and oomph, and are easy to play against. If Cameron remains the head coach of this team, the 67s will continue to be a team that works hard and plays a structured game, and a team that can beat the weaker teams most nights and stay competitive with the stronger teams most games. However, they will lack high-end scoring once Pinelli is gone, they lack secondary scoring, they don't play a visually appealing style of play, and now that Mews is gone they will not have any high-end NHL draft prospects for the fans to get behind or get excited about. That all says to me that the 67s will be a boring team to watch over the next few seasons.

I've long suspected that Boyd's primary job is to keep the 67s competitive so that they don't fall too behind in terms of fan interest in the competitive Ottawa sports landscape. My competitive I mean, at least a playoff team. Given how much chatter was out there with respect to the Pinelli trade I don't think that factored into the end result of him remaining with the 67s...I simply think Boyd fumbled the bag on closing a reasonable transaction. If my overall suspicion is true though, OSEG may be putting a floor on how weak the 67s can be at any point during a rebuild, but also imposing a ceiling on how many chips Boyd can push in for a true championship run.

So either OSEG is imposing boundaries on how Boyd manages the ebbs and flows of the OHL cycle, or Boyd isn't really good at his job.

That makes it hard for a fan - casual or committed - to get excited about the team and seeing a path to a championship run. In one sense we've been fortunate here; the 2019 OHL finals run was pretty special, 2020 had the makings of a good run as well. 2023 was disappointing in the end but overall the season had exciting games and moments. After today, its difficult to get excited about a whole lot as there doesn't seem to be an overriding strategy there.

Agree with what you are saying.
My point is, Boyd's bosses are super happy, this has been a good year $$$ in the old building they will soon replace. Why would they fire Boyd (even if some of us think he should be...)

The "failed deals" will only help bolster attendance until the rest of the 67s season is, and heck they will have two playoff games to boot.

The most charitable look at what they are doing is that they are rebuilding with an eye to the opening of the new building in 2027, but that doesn't explain why Pinelli is still here. I don't care if it looks like a bad return - if you're burning it to the ground go all out. I have tried to be charitable to Boyd in the past, but this is a dumpster fire now. If I'm wrong, then he better get himself on TSN 1200 and give some answers...

Anyone with even a passing interest in the OHL trade deadline can go on Twitter and see the chatter around Boyd having deals lined up but unable to get the potential trade partners to waive the NTCs. Certainly not a good look. But not surprising after the WJHCs, which was a complete disaster in terms of how fans (and most likely, young players) view Cameron.

Supposedly that’s why Ott pulled the pin.
It’s also possible he said it to force their hand because we have known since July he doesn’t want to be in Ottawa.

Best line in this interview was that he said 14 teams trying to add so it was a sellers market. He was armed with a 48 goal scorer that played for Team Canada and in that market he wasn’t able to sell him. Laughable. OUT!
