Ottawa 67s 2024 - 25 Offseason Thread, Part I

As we all know, Rohrer is back in the spotlight. One of the things I did not know is that a part of his contract with Zurich gives them the option to bring back if he does not make the NHL
European Assignment Clause is common in those contracts.
It makes logical sense too; some European’s earn significantly more than they would on their AHL Salary.

Wasn't that already announced during the season, or am I confusing him with another of our OA players?

It’s new. The thought was maybe he’d get a Pro offer. Him going NCAA signals that he is going to continue his development in school as opposed to accepting a minor pro contract.

I think we will see a lot more players play NCAA vs sign Minor Pro contracts.

How many years can he play in the NCAA? Is it possible for them to get a degree, or are they just there to play hockey

Impact of NCAA Decision on Players Drafted from Major Junior

One caveat this season is the NCAA's recent decision to allow players with Major Junior experience play college hockey, beginning in the 2025-26 season. This has resulted in a handful of players committing to U.S colleges for next season after having played two full seasons of Major Junior post-draft.

Some front office sources tell PuckPedia they expect these players’ rights will be extended by two years, as is typically the case for players who leave Major Junior early before age 20. However, some player agents dispute that interpretation in conversations with PuckPedia. This topic was brought up at the GM meetings in March, and it is possible that the NHL and NHLPA negotiate a resolution either prior to the new CBA, or at a minimum, as part of the new CBA.

Until that resolution is announced, league and agent contacts generally agree that these players drafted out of Major Junior in 2023 and who played Major Junior last season should be treated as June 1, 2025 expiries, regardless of their NCAA commitments.

Mayich is caught in the middle and it is going to be a decison by the league and PA

Where the confusion lies is that USHL players that had committed to College and had played two years in the USHL after being NHL drafted and went to College had their rights held longer by the NHL team. So, many suggest that is the precedent. Valid point. But, no one has challenged it.

The language states that the player needs to be a bonafide NCAA student. But, if an agent were to challenge the language in an effort to have their client deemed a free agent, they may very well win that challenge. So, the NHL needs to clean up the language now that the NCAA/CHL rules have changed. It will get cleaned up next year with the new CBA but they may clean it up this summer.

I heard Vandenberg has signed earlier this week. No idea when it will be announced though

Good signing. 3rd line centre locked up. Now he just needs to fit into the role and hopefully push for more!

Let’s hope more signings are in the works.

Let’s hear your current line combinations

As I have said to @beastintheeast I think we should wait a bit before we start taking a stab at line combo’s. I think there are a lot of player possibilities still out there. I could post some “depth chart” line combos but with so may potential variables right now, I doubt they would be close to accurate.

Lets wait on the Import draft and see if we get kids like Barnett, Zielinaki etc before we jump the gun.

I think we could see a lot of unhappy returning players getting waived when all is said and done.

Apparently a couple of the American free agents that turned up for rookie camp looked really good. So who knows what is in store for this group next year. The doom and gloom predicted mid-season this year could be dramatically off of Boyd manages to pull out some great signings. This Vandenberg signing is a great start.

Conversely, we could see Foster go play NCAA. End up being worse with a couple players leaving early. Who knows?

It's a start, hopefully more to come.

Nice signing. Beast will have him traded by Friday.
No I actually like the signing. I think it helps shore up our offence.

Now that we have one is it possible to bring someone in from the U.S.

I agree with @OMG67 right now is too soon to be looking at lines.

We need to see who comes to camp and how prepared they are. If I am Barlas and Horner, I am looking for a CCHL or university team to play with next year.

I see Vandenberg and Whitehead fighting for the 2nd line center job.

I would still say, though that my first line at this point would be Ekberg Dever Foster

I think there are “depth chart” lines and then how the chemistry ends up working. I think right now the chances are pretty good that Foster plays centre with Ekberg on his wing. I am not sure dever ends up on the wing vs centre. Although, we could see Foster back on the wing with Dever at centre. It will depend on what they have behind them. As you mentioned, can Whitehead compete for 2C? Can Vandenberg, at 17, compete for 2C? Will one of those two guys push one of Foster or Dever to the wing? Dunno.

I do think Vandenberg plays 3C and Chitaroni plays 4C….at least to start. But, when you look at kids like Hopkins and Griffin at 17 this year, you could see a kid like Vandenberg push hard for 2C. He may have been a 5th round pick but many had him as that late 1st or early 2nd round pick. He may have enough moxie to push for 2C. Probably in the 2nd half though. Same with Chitaroni at 3C. Probably in the 2nd half.

Yeah I can not see Chitaroni staying at 4c

I am as you know against Dever and Foster as centers. For good or bad we have to give the young guys the ice time so that next year we actually have a 1c 2c instead of trying to trade or develop.

The other thing we need to be wary of is too many NCAA bound players in the same year as our other players.

Again, there are a lot of variables this year that will factor into what the roster looks like in September, let alone what the lineup will look like. That’s the big issue right now.

Usually we have a strong sense of what the roster will look like. Maybe we may bicker a bit over who the 21st through 23rd roster players are? But, this year, I think we will see more signings that affect what our current 16th through 20th roster spots look like. Those signings may affect positional needs. I may have a kid like Brady playing beside Marrelli right now (more as a placeholder) and then they sign two American D-Men and all of a sudden Brady is out the door. Going from 20 minutes per game to waived for a player like Brady is a very distinct possibility depending on who ends up being added.

This situation is abnormal. A lot of teams will see the effects of the potential double cohort by adding the defecting USHL players committed to US College. It may be an exciting summer of surprise signings or it may be a deflating summer of player defects to early NCAA admissions. Who knows? But, I expect more of a roller coaster ride through training camp.

Exactly ... because the coach and GM are bad and he isn't being developed properly.

I think now that we know who will be around this year, even @beastintheeast understands that there is no sense in criticism until post deadline and we see how everything plays out.

As mentioned, with all of the variables we are presented with this year, having some form of consistency on the bench and in the front office is probably a good thing, regardless of many of the shortcomings that may be present. I think this season will go a long way toward validating the positives and negatives that have been discussed at length on here over the past year. The upper management will have all the tools/data necessary to make a decision on the future direction of the franchise.

As much as I agreed with removing DC this year, in hindsight with all the variability, I don’t think changing the coach is an ideal situation in addition to dealing with all the changes in the landscape across the CHL and NCAA. Taking a breather on that topic is probably a good thing. Let;s get behind the team as fans and hope for positive results.

It will be interesting to see how this team is put together. I have heard that both of the top 2 overage players have no intention to play in Ottawa.

I’ve heard the exact opposite and that all the OA candidates are hoping to return.

What’s next for the team?

The trade window opens in June?
I wonder if we could see a busy period and player’s rights get traded more often than in the past? A player like Lucas Prudhomme in Owen Sound for example; he’s from Ottawa and committed to Quinnipiac; but why isn’t he playing for the Attack?

The Import Draft is in early July.
Kitchener’s beatwriter wrote an article that confirmed that Chromiak is back as an overager and Import pick; we may see that become more common in the league. Brantford and Hamara worked out nicely for the team and player just last season.

Prud'homme was one of the kids on the St Andrews College team. Those kids could only play on a B card this year. He did spend time with the Attack to practice etc. Once the NCAA eligibility rules changed I think he would have been a guy the Attack would have liked to have brought in but the B card limitations made that more difficult. I expect he's in camp for the Attack this year but he may be in tough to make the roster so I wouldn't be shocked if he got moved to a team willing to give him a spot. DeGray was really high on him when they originally drafted him for what it's worth.

Thanks for the insight on this.

That explains why Dervin, Lane & Dec only played a handful of games.
