Nylander can walk in 2 years as a UFA. No guarantee he sticks around longer than that.

Sure, but if he was available at a reasonable contract long term there would be many suitors.

As I said, considering some of the deals on the board, the acquisition of Nylander would certainly help with Ottawa’s hole in the top six.

The problem being that Grieg and a 7th don’t help with Toronto’s immediate problem of getting out of the first round.

Yes, there are suitors for Nylander right now -- but the kind of teams that would trade for him are the kind of teams who are a "Nylander away" from taking that next step to be a high end playoff team or contender.

It's not the value that's necessarily unfair, it's the TIMING for OTT because they're not contending for the Cup within 2 years.

If you want to package 7th overall & Greig, you can get an established, or closer to NHL ready, young player who has more term on his deal than Nylander.

But seriously, keep Greig and the 7th overall. Trade other prospects or later picks to provide depth, and sign a UFA or two. That's how you build a team that will be a lasting, long term competitor.

All that makes sense.

Sometimes there aren’t the kind of quality guys available right when you need them, which is why Nylander is attractive immediately after a playoff loss.

I agree that other teams have a stronger need for that immediate impact.

I suspect Nylander himself would rather play for a team that is already in the playoffs if the Leafs want to move on.

Not sure if OP is OTT or TOR or neutral fan but if TOR dangled Nylander I would have to think it would be for a high end right shot D, no?

If the Sens are moving a package like that, they should be targetting a defenseman. They really need to bolster their top 4, Chabot and Zub need help back there. There are always a plethora of top 6 or middle six wingers on the FA market, while true top 4 D are pretty scarce. Use the big trade chip(s) to add a Dman and the UFA market to support the forward group.

True.

Or, they can package Greig and 7th overall to move up 2-3 spots and select one of Nemec or Jireck and they'll have their top pairing RHD of the future.

But they may be able to trade up a spot or two in the draft without giving up Greig (2nd rounder + another pick or B+ prospect).

It’s like clockwork. Leafs lose in round one, and we see a bunch of trade proposals to fix the Leafs’ cap allocation problems.
Sens will not want Nylander.

We actually need someone to play with Stutzle if the top line of Batherson-Norris-Tkachuk remains intact.

Guys like Brown, Joseph and Formenton are hard working speedsters but they don’t have elite finishing.

Sens would love Nylander, just not at this cost. He might be the best player available, but moving such prime assets for a guy who is, at best, 50-50 to be on our team in 3 years would be a crippling blow.

Every GM knows that the Leafs is in caphell.

No one should be willing to help them.
