The two aren't comparable though...cowen and ceci are nothing alike.

It's like being disappointed in how a bottom 6 UFA signing turned out so you stopped looking at top 6 UFA options...because they're both forwards, and both would be acquired the same way. It doesn't make any sense.

Their styles are different. Their question marks are different. Their playing ability is different. Their ability to skate is different. Their ability to think the game is different.

The comparison flat out makes no sense. Should we be cautious with signing karlsson to a long term deal because he too, like cowen is a defenseman and drafted by Ottawa? Or should we look at greater details than that, such as the things i mentioned above. Potential, playing ability, type of player, etc.

It's like Ottawa having last year's 1st overall and not taking mcdavid because we weren't happy how daigle turned out.

Every situation is different and needs to be treated differently. Especially two very different players like big slow cowen vs a guy who looks like a doughty-lite out there

Except I wasn't comparing them at all as players, simply that the organization probably has a different philosophy and approach now when it comes to backing up the brinks truck for young d-man with potential.

Not bad when you see Cowen making $3.1M per year over 4 years in a deal that was signed in 2013.

Refreshing.

Well done Dorion.

It's a good deal, but as you wrote, Cowen's contract was for 4 years.

If you look at the first 2 years, Cowen got $4.2M while Ceci will get $5.6M.

So in 2-3 years the Sens are gonna have to resign Karlsson, Turris, Brassard, Stone and Ceci. That's gonna be tough.

Ya, it won't be easy. They aren't overly likely to be re-signing Brass though. He's more likely to be replaced internally by Brown, White, JGP, or Lazar (with the last two being long shots).

Basically all of them re-signed except one.

The Sens will have to choose between Turris and Brassard eventually.

In 2-3 years, one or both of Brown and White should be ready for top 6.

I think he means it is risky in that the next deal could end up being massive (ie Subban) instead of getting a long term deal now at a lower aav.

Ceci will not command Subban money. If he puts up two solid seasons (~50 pts, plus player, continues to develop into a #2 D) he will get around 6-7 M.

Good deal but I wonder who was pushing for the short term deal?

Cowen 2.0

Nope.

Cowen was highly touted due to his physical tools, but he was never able to show that he wasn't dumber than dirt.

Ceci is an intelligent hockey player, with slightly worse physical tools than Cowen.

Hockey IQ -----> being big.

Every time.

Chalk another name up to the list of players we'll need to sign in 2-3 years from now that are our core.

But until then, great deal. Looking forward to the season starting.

Come to think of it 2-3 years is smart business wise. If things go well over the next cpl years then great they can resign their core however if things go bad 2-3 years is the perfect time to sell off the big assets.

That's why I mentioned when it was signed.

There's still inflation when it comes to contracts.

Karlsson is making 6.5M a year but that deal was signed years ago.

People around here insist on comparing current contracts with past contracts without taking the cap into account.

Leafs fan here. Good signing by the Sens. Did Phaneuf have any impact on Cici last year?

Phaneuf on the 2nd pair was really good for the Sens and Ceci.

Ceci had terrible partners prior to Phaneuf. You could see a marked improvement in Ceci's game with the arrival of Phaneuf.
