Montreal needs centres. Ottawa needs scoring winger.

To Habs: Colin White + Zach Smith

To Sens: Max Pacioretti

Habs get promising young centre + vet that in Smith who can play both wing and centre for the time being while rebuild begins.

Ottawa gets a proven scorer that might jumpstart their woeful power play and fit in well in the top 6 beside Duchene or Brassard on a regular basis.

Regardless of the value, we're giving up two centres for a winger.

That's a pretty big blow to our depth at that position.

We are dealing from a position of relative strength with Logan Brown in the wings. We need to replace Mcarthur and Patches is cost efficient and a proven goal scorer who would certainly help us produce more offensively. Pyatt, Dzingel or Thompson in the top 6 is not cutting it.

Montreal needs a top 6 C, not another 3rd line C. I think with Plekanek and Danault they are fine there.

this is awful for the habs, but its bergevin so who knows

Easy yes from this Sens fan. Habs would likely win long-term (almost zero chance the Sens would re-sign Pacioretty) but Sens would give themselves a really good shot to compete in the next two years,

It's a fair offer and a good fit IMHO. Smith was previously a 3C but is now the 2LW and has been for most of his last 130 games or so

If the trade value proposal was for this package you would look on in more kindly.

"top 9 winger with 40+ goals over the past two seasons and signed for 3 more years at ~$3m"

plus

"20 year old 6'1 high end 2 way centre prospect universally considered to be in the top 40 NHL prospects, with 20 Months remaining on his ELC"

That said, I don't think Ottawa trades White unless it is in some blockbuster for star player with a long contract.

Yes, without Pacioretty, the Canadiens are pretty much a dead team. How much can Drouin do at this point?

Also, the name is, "Pacioretty".

that would cost a lot more than white.

white is basically a kapanen level prospect. throw in another top prospect and a couple 1sts and you might get what you are seeking

No he's not a Kapanen level prospect. Also not sure why you had to make this somehow about the leafs

Anyways, the trade is horrible, though. As good as the prospects can be, I think Ottawa needs to add to get an elite player like Pacioretty.
we have 2 in our line up already, 1-DMan & 1-Winger, on top of that we also have a very good center depth

What OTT need is another Zach Smith type of player, not a 1st line winger

Personally as is it is an underpayment. But I also think Habs fabs will be disappointed with the return for him.. teams aren't going to be stepping up big for a top end streaky winger.
Look at what Ryan got. Thats probably gonna be close..

1st+Roster player (Silf)+prospect (Noeson)
Soo in modern day..
1st+White (better then Silf, but Max is also a bit better then Ryan at time of trade Also not quite a roster guy but better all around the Silf)+Paul
