Talbot played on a pretty darn good team in front of him those last 3 seasons though. He won't have that luxury in Ottawa. So don't be surprised if he struggles quite a lot.
He's a one year fail safe however, no handcuffing the team in any way. Gus must not have been in near or distant future plans sadly. Brassard trade ends up being garbage unless JBD can be a 2RD but looks like he can't evn be a 3rd pairing D as is..

Talbot isn't great but he is a good goalie, that wins games. Good trade for the Sens.

74 wins in his last 3 regular seasons in 108 games
159 team points = 1.48 team points per game

18-19 season wasn't good but 2 previous seasons
73 wins, 158 team points in 130 games = 1.21 team points per game

2017, 2020, 2021 play-offs
15 wins, 14 losses, 2.44 gaa and .924 sv%

And....Ottawa cements it's victory as "Most Improved Team" this offseason. Don't think anybody can match them even with free agency about to start.

Meh...I didn't like the idea of both Talbot and Flower at $3m+. I'm ok with getting a younger and cheaper backup.

Talbot really took a step backwards this past season and was playing terrible leading up to the trade deadline which forced the move for Flower... that gave Talbot a wakeup call to improve down the stretch.

He's a journeyman goaltender who's nothing special so i'm not losing sleep over it, especially considering the cap savings.

I remember 2 seasons ago when Ottawa "finished hot" and everyone was saying ohhh playoffs.. then what happened? 7th pick ..

B-b-but they got DeBrincat!! Now you just have to find an elite player like Patty Kane to go with him.

Ottawa not making the playoffs after this offseason is gonna be amazing.

Yup he has put up good numbers, but he is 15- 16 with no Cups. He is a good goalie. Not an upgrade on Murray but still good
This is such a bad take, Murray is awful man lol.

James Gandolfini resurrecting from the dead to make a new season of the Sopranos has a better chance of happening than Murray rebounding. Talbot is a considerable upgrade over Murray and cheaper.

Well yes thats just common logic. Playoff push? No but they are headed in the right direction.
I dunno man, if we end up signing Giroux and top 4 RHD we are likely going to be pretty competitive. On paper, we’re a playoff team I think but it remains to be seen if we can put it together on the ice.

I know people aren’t use to seeing the Sens do shit right so it’ll take time for the league to adjust 😂.

Gustavsson might be better already. Sens played like absolute trash in front of him. Don't like it at all as a sens fan. He moves really well.

They absolutely don't have room for both now even getting one might screw up their ability to keep the young core. PD needs to take a deep breath. Drunk on power rn. Teflon Dorion allowed to burn assets and cap on all his terrible decisions.

Yeah the org clearly has mads infront of Gus so I guess we moved on from him.

Why would he slow down? Melnyk isn’t breathing down his neck anymore. No way Melnyk gives the go ahead on the Debrincat trade with that QO attached to it. Pierre about to trade himself to the Avs for future considerations and then trade himself, Mackinnon, and Makar back to the Sens for a 5th.

I think we land both a top 4 RHD before the season starts and at least take a good run at Giroux.

It will come at the expense of very good player(s) in the core moving forward. Same situation as Tavares in Toronto. How do you know the sens are willing to do the QO to Debrincat anyways? Dorion is quite clearly a very insecure person. He created the Murray mess and is praised for paying assets and taking salary back to get rid of his own mistake. Del Zotto, White etc. He's burnt over 5 million in cap. Everyone is forgetting he creates this. He's terrible at his job. The core will be very competitive in a year or two gassing assets now when they aren't close and going all I while Stutzle is 20 ain't it. This team finished 30 points out of the playoffs. I've stuck with this team through an embarrassing 5 years on and off the ice. I have the patience to wait a year or two more for when it's actually time they go for it. Every team experiences losing in the playoffs before they take the next step. Ottawa has not.even come close to doing that yet.

All this for Ottawa to still not make the playoffs. Classic.

You do know the season hasn’t started yet right? That all these moves happened in something called the “off-season”? You must also know it well, the Leafs usually have a very long one. During that time teams make moves to improve for the NEXT season.

So your statement is incongruent, because “all this” precedes the season.

You’ll get there champ.

This post reeks of insecurity.

After all the Leafs have been through I can’t blame you though :)

I would have been more than happy for the Sens to go into the season with Forsberg/Gus as the goalie tandem, but obviously they don’t have a ton of confidence in Gus…. And they have a couple of younger goalies that they see as the future.

Gus has some great tools, I think he’ll be a very good goalie at some point. Minnesota did well.

just funny heard reaction

talbot has been trash all year long and allowed 16.23 goal overexpected but because he was playing in front a very good defensive team, he was looking good in term of stats " oh what a move from Ottawa, they going hard to reach playoff"

the problem was not goaltending but the defensive group in front...

It depends. Are the Sens a better team today because of it? Arguably, yes.

The point I'm making is, if they don't make the playoffs, which I do not expect them to... What was the benefit of trading a young goalie prospect for a 1 year rental of a 35 year old Talbot?

Do you think a 35 year old Talbot would be the difference between this Sens teams making or missing the playoffs?

If they add Giroux (which seems likely at this point), they have a very deep team in terms of forwards. Enough to make the playoffs IMO. Solidifying the net will go a long way in that regard.

In terms of making the playoffs as is - I will have a better answer in a week or so when the roster is finalized. For now, I do think Talbot gets us a few more points in the standings over GusGus, and that could be the difference between no playoffs and a wildcard spot.
