The Hackett and Wilson debacles demonstrate that Accountability died along with Pat Bowlen.

2 first round picks, 2 second round picks & now the (by far) biggest dead cap charge in NFL history. A head coach hire who was obviously in over his head, starting with the first game.

How have heads (looking at YOU, George Paton) not rolled?????????
The reason Paton and Joseph haven't been fired is 100% so that Sean Payton has someone to scapegoat next season when we suck again. They are extra layers of insulation between Payton and accountability.

I think he's talking about Russell Wilson?

Today, they announced they are cutting him. No one's terribly surprised, I suppose. But it's official now. Or will be next week.

$85M in dead cap. Damn.
Broncos paid him $85 mill the past 2 seasons and only took $39 mill in cap charges. Notwithstanding the money due in 2024.

TB and LAR made the PO with over $70 mill in dead cap this past season. Don't expect Denver to do that given the harder AFC, but doesn't prevent you from being competitive. Just have to be smart with the contracts moving forward.

I love your scorched earth theory. Problem is I don't think it's true. Payton probably told them in the interview of the chance we'd be here still not in the playoffs so we might get rid of Russ. While no one wanted to lose this year I'm sure all this was planned for if it happened as it did.

It doesn't matter at all way Payton says. His word is worth even less than a politician's. He'd sell out his own mother with a smile on his face to save his own skin.

The cap just went up like $30M dollars - Denver will be hurting but it’s not going to destroy everything. I do think they should trade Simmons and one of the WRs though. Simmons is awesome but he deserves a shot somewhere else while we take our lumps the next 2-3 years.

Well I guess Russ is officially over and not a moment too soon. I've literally never hated a professional athlete until Russ. He's nothing more than used car salesman. How about you work on playing the sport you get paid infinitely too much to play, instead of selling corny pickup lines.

I can't imagine a team dumb enough to pick him up. He will burn that franchise into the ground just like he did here. Well I guess I'd be ok with him going to New England or Pittsburgh it'd be fun watching them implode.

That being said they better be going all in on a draft pick, find the guy you like go get him and start from there. No more of this average backup, desperate old guy crap. Pick a young guy and give him the reins and build from there.

I wouldn't necessarily mark that as the worst trade in football history because IMO the Panthers trading up to get Bryce Young is going to cost them far more in this year's draft alone. Now...if Young actually pans out it's not quite as bad but it sure don't look like he's going to.

Regardless, it's certainly the worst move this franchise has ever made. Even worse than hiring Nathaniel Hackett as their head coach.

Yes, but it went up $30M for everyone.

Denver might not have to shed as many players, true. But they're going to miss out on a really good FA class this year, as many other teams will be able to improve.

In addition, they only have one pick out of the first 75 picks in this year's draft, and only two picks in the top 120. So, they're missing out on a nice chunk of the top of the draft, while other teams will be able to improve here as well.

In other words, there's a pretty good chance that they're going to fall farther behind the pack prior to the 2024 season.

They really should be in full out rebuild mode. They're in a division where two of the three other teams have really good/elite QBs in their 20s. They're in a conference where at least 7 of the 15 other teams have a really good/elite QB - all 7 of them in their 20s. And I'm not even counting Trevor Lawrence or DeShaun Watson amongst the 7. (Didn't count Aaron Rodgers either though he's obviously over 30). That's a lot of good QBs in the conference, QBs who all have a number of good core years ahead of them.

The Broncos are going to stink for awhile here. They should just embrace it and fully rebuild. Trade vets for picks as best they can, have a few years drafting at the very top of the draft, where they can get a legit QB and a couple of other top end talents. Or perhaps get that QB and trade a top pick or two for a handful of 1st round picks and fill out their roster with quality talent.

At least there would be some hope a few years down the road.

Oh, there’ll be a team willing to sign him. Especially if (since he’s already getting paid $30M next season) he takes a nice $5M contract to start for someone.

An other-than-QB solid team could do very well with a legit starting QB with a $5M cap hit. As negative as Wilson was with Denver, he is still a legitimate starting NFL QB, albeit a quickly declining one.

I'd be surprised if Wilson takes more than the vet minimum (1.2m?) from anybody... he's gonna be petty as shit about that.

I actually think it’s a blessing in disguise for this team. Sure they miss out on guys, but Mike Evans at $26M per year? That’s crazy. Over the next couple of years we are going to suck. But we are also going to be so hard up against the cap that maybe there might be some sort of financial restraint on this team for a change and maybe some players signed to bargain contracts. I’m all for the full on rebuild too. Once Russ’s cap numbers start to really pile off, this will be exciting again. I sure hope Paton’s not here when that happens though. Or they can at least wait until some guys play some football downs for the team before selling the franchise to them.

They said on the TNT broadcast tonight that Reggie Jackson has been playing through a bad toe injury. That would probably explain his downtick in shooting recently.

Pathetic that none of the so-called reporters in this town sniffed that out.

Team winning this game after whatever that was in the 2nd quarter will be amazing.
