Other Sports: Broncos, Nuggets, Rockies etc…Part VII

As I said, I get it. Pay the players.

But the way it's set up now, would be similar to an NHL, where every player was on a one-year contract, every year. Players would be hopping around every 12 months like grasshoppers. Why even be a fan of a particular team at that point?

I'm finding it hard to get into it. My college team completely revamped their starting lineup last year (minus one starter), and this offseason (between graduation and portal), they're replacing the top TEN players from last year's team. Basically every single player who played minutes.

It's so much less interesting now.
I'll be honest. I'd like to see UFA ages in the NHL dropped tremendously too. Five years from the 18th birthday. That's it. When you turn 23, you should start to have a say in your future. Especially considering how shortlived most NHL careers are.

Drafts really feel like a form of slavery in this day and age to me. Why can't athletes decide who they work for in a time an age where freaking coffee barista's have choices?

The Salary Cap would still be in place and would still be the key mechanism for keeping team strengths aligned across the board. Unless a whole bunch of studs decided to take league minimum for one year to give Buffalo a Stanley Cup... and to be honest... who would be against that and can I show you the door?

You guys act like the fans interest matters. The NCAA did what they could to keep this from happening but now it's pretty much official. College teams are essentially like AAA affiliates and the leagues get this for free. Didn't make sense to me why the NBA didn't put more into The G or the NFL create a spring league for its own talent. Now it's obvious, they just stood by until it became someone else's expense. The best programs are about to become bigger and better. Ohio State and Alabama programs are going to be worth nearly what major league teams sell for. And this isn't because it's what the schools or anyone else wanted, it's what the talent demands in compensation and opportunities. And how could that be stopped? If this didn't happen someone else would have figured it out.

The NCAA didn't do shit except clutch onto the billions it made off the backs of kids and young adults and say "It's mine, it's mine!" What's going on now was inevitable but they made it 10X worse by allowing ESPN and other outside entities to pump even more obscene amounts of money into the whole enterprise, which led to the whole mess with power conferences stealing schools from one another, and coaches getting a sizable cut themselves.

They could've taken steps to soften the blow considerably, but they refused, and then got their asses handed to them in court multiple times.

If Jokic doesn't win MVP, the league and that award should lose all credibility.

Shai great player, but the only thing he does better than Jokic is shoot more free throws.

Oh the Thunder are the leagues best team and Shai is the best player on that team he deserves it... Lol. The Nuggets without Jokic are in the Cooper Flagg discussion, the Thunder without Shai still win 50+ games and are an easy playoff team.

What Jokic accomplished this year with this shit ass roster is historical. Shai is good at getting free throws.

Wins matter... If that's the case then how come it didn't matter when the league gifted Embiid the award when Jokic had better stats and a better team record? It's a load of shit, everyone knows why they don't want Jokic to win again and it has nothing to do with basketball.

Yeah, the NCAA was the second most corrupt bullshit gangster organization in sports behind the Olympic Comittee.

One down, one to go.

In order to make the playoffs, the Mammoth need to beat Calgary on Saturday and then have any of the following happen
  • A Calgary win vs. Las Vegas on Friday
  • A Georgia loss vs. Buffalo on Saturday
  • A San Diego loss vs. Albany on Friday
  • An Ottawa loss vs. Saskatchewan on Saturday
They were sitting pretty last month, but a 4 game losing streak down the stretch has them needing a win to get back to .500.

Of course it's Calgary they're playing. We are in a forever war with those assbutts.

I wonder who the prospective buyers might be.

At least locally, there are only a few candidates

1. Stan Kroenke, duh. Owns the LA Rams, Arsenal, Arsenal WFC, and of course the Avalanche, Nuggets, Rapids, and Mammoth.

2. Walton/Penners - Stan's wife's cousins and the majority owners of the Broncos

3. Mellody Mobson - minority owner of the Broncos and the upcoming Denver NWSL team, married to George Lucas, former chair of Starbucks and Dreamworks, current president of Ariel Investments

4. Rob Cohen - primary owner of the NWSL team, CEO of IMA Financial Group, heavily involved in local and state government sports outreach and tourism programs.

Remember when the Rockies were 1-1? Those were the days. Peaked early this year.

Now 3-15 overall, 1-11 on the road.

But hey, if we got to play all our games at home we'd only be like... the third worst team in the league. So we have that going for us.

The most viable one from that list is Kroenke. Makes sense from his perspective to own all the major teams in town outside the Broncos. And has the resources to easily do so and doesn't own a baseball team.

Maybe Walton/Penner not sure if they are really into the sports ownership thing full bore like Kroenke. Could be very content with just the Broncos. Could be an option.

Hobson not sure she has the resources, would have to put a group together.

Cohen also would have resource issues and would need a big backing group.

Honestly wouldn't be surprised if Monfort sold now. Same with KSE selling the Rapids or even the whole enchilada of the 3 teams in Denver eventually. Sports valuations are getting crazy and the new buyers are super rich and competitive. These guys don't play that game, they see these as unique businesses with bottom lines that matter and in KSEs case, option value in real estate.

Dick would see a massive price now on a crap asset that's not growing much in revenue for him, but the valuation is getting heady. I mean he's probably looking at 3-4 billion and hopefully it's bought by someone with FU money that spends on everything. Dick and his kids can buy businesses that are profitable and can be managed like others and stop trying to think pro sports should work that way

Oh FIFA is far more corrupt than the NBA. FIFA has a legit argument as the most corrupt organization in the world.
Perhaps at a high level yes for things like where to place their events and getting kickbacks related to it. But controlling the event outcomes and maximizing ratings it's all on UEFA and the individual leagues. The NBA acts like these leagues all too often IMO. The main difference to me is that the regular season is all meaningless in NBA and not in the big soccer leagues so I still go with NBA for shading results and letting refs show outright biases. But for sure soccer is a mess.

Don King straight up killed two people, stole millions of dollars from fighters, has been caught bribing various people, has been caught fixing fights... and he's still not even close to the most corrupt figure in boxing.

Just think about that for a second.

Clint Hurdle is replacing Meulens as hitting coach, you know the guy that was a hitting coach 25 f***ing years ago.

The Rockies are such a f***ing joke of an org. Monfort is so f***ing lucky the stadium is pure gold and we have millions of transplants willing to shell cash to drink 4 beers and cheer as their team buttslams our minor league team on the reg.
