Damn, sucks to be a Niners fan.

Brandon Aiyuk, after all that contract hassle in the summer, blows out his ACL and MCL, so he's on the shelf alongside Christian McCaffrey, and Deebo Samuel missed most of last night's game due to illness.

They got an insanely old offense, not a ton younger on defense IIRC, and have some big potential contracts on the horizon, most notably Brock Purdy. Numbers-wise he's proven he's more than just a product of the system, but he's also not anywhere close to being among the elite starters of the league. How much do you pay a guy like that?

People talk about the Bryce Young trade, but the deal to get Trey Lance was possibly worse. The long-term implications there may shut the window for SF before they get another real crack at it.

If they are smart and can tune out the fanbase you trade Purdy before he holds out on account of not getting an extension. Unfortunately for them they can't trade him in season because they have weak backup options so that's a draft day trade if I ever saw one. He already hit his ceiling and if he does better it's because the team added more talent at skill positions. Is that even possible?

Aaron Gordon signs a team friendly 3+1 year extension (3 years guaranteed, 1 year player option) for 133M. He helped us out significantly by opting in for just 23M next year, keeping us under the 2nd apron.

If we could just dump the Zeke, Tyson, and Pickett contracts we'd have almost 20 million in space under the 2nd apron next year for free agency or trade acquisitions.

The Lance trade is one of the worst in history. It just doesn't get the same attention as some others, because SF's roster has been so strong otherwise.

I confess that I don't fully understand all of the NBA's cap nuances, nor the gymnastics that GMs have to perform to "stay under the 2nd apron". But I'll take your word for it that it's a good thing. :D

Gordon is a good player. Important to the team. I'm glad they kept him.

The Athletic's headline that popped up on my watch this morning was something like 'Bo Nix of the Broncos heads out in....' ....it's about him using his feet and running the ball. How dense do you have to be to write that headline?!?

They also need to match their headlines on watch/mobile to the actual f***ing article online, but they've gotten real bad lately so guess my expectations have fallen, at least lol

The 2nd apron is essentially a level so far above the salary cap that the penalties are ridiculous. If your team is over that spending level you can no longer sign players to the TPMLE (without getting into it, it would've meant we couldn't have signed Bruce Brown, Reggie Jackson, or Dario Saric in any of the last three seasons), it means your team can no longer use cash in trades, it means your team can't stack up multiple small contracts to match the salary of one bigger contract in a trade, no sign-and-trades, your first round picks seven years out are frozen (untradeable), and you can't use trade exceptions.

And, even worse, if your team is over the 2nd apron in any 3 out of any 5 seasons, your draft picks automatically start dropping to the end of the first round.

So in effect it's a hard cap. Only a few teams will eclipse it in any one season, and almost no team is going to want to be over it for 3 out of 5.

So Gordon taking this deal (about 17M less than he could've gotten over the life of the contract) allows us at least one extra season, if not multiple, under that penalty level. It may be inevitable that we spend a season or two over it once Joker and Murray and Gordon's raises kick in, but this extra season under it is absolutely invaluable. And not that we care as fans, but Gordon's deal also saved Stan Kroenke about 60 extra million dollars in cash penalties.

I don't follow MLS that closely, is this a good idea?

They kind of need to in order to get and sell the talent. They spent decades trying to be a developer of domestic talent and do things their own way but it's clear their future is to just be part of the global system.

For the MLS, who knows what they do with franchises in cold locations. Maybe the Rapids and others like the Swans or Fire partner up with a warmer location to handle the worst of the weather or they set up some sort of mass neutral ground in Florida or California and play "home" games there. Can't expect to sell many tickets to that January 10th game even if the weather turns out ok. Besides the MLS doesn't care much about the Midwest, all their franchises of note are in better weather other than maybe the Philly and NYC clubs. Columbus can kill it year after year and they will still try to find ways to make Miami succeed more

I already don't care about soccer. If you want to make me care about it even less, put it on TV during NFL season.

LaMelo is a great player with injury issues but he never had the knee procedure that Landy and Lonzo had. Lonzo, in his first regular season game back from the procedure played 14 minutes and had 5 points 2 rebounds and 4 assists.

Lonzo will not play any back to back games and will likely be on a 20 minute restriction for the first half of the season.

There is literally no outside shooting on this team anymore. And MPJ only shows up in like 1/4 of the games as usual. Jamal has aged like warm buttermilk.
