He hadn't looked very well for a long long time. Wonder if he was hiding an illness from everyone. About as Canadiana as you can get. I remember him talking about playing bars and lounges in the 60's, and getting 2 or 3 songs in during intermission of HNIC before Ward Cornell came on.

Coming in late on this. RIP to a distinctive Canadian icon who always stayed true north to his roots. An incredible storyteller with such a distinctive voice. In a much simpler era of 1970s Canada it seemed like Gordon Lightfoot was ubiquitous on the two, maybe three radio station Saskatoon I grew up in. Lived an absolute full and complete life with a legacy that will be timeless and like a time capsule of a kinder, simpler era in Canada.

Lots of great memories expressed by peeps here. Really nice to read how music and quality performers can leave an indelible mark on us all.

Ex Oiler and 1990 hero Petr Klima has died in Czech republic. May you rest in peace and thank you for the many and unique memories. Know that you were loved here by many and that we never, never, forgot about you.

That was the last playoffs of supreme joy for the Oilers and Klima had some huge parts in it.
Not to get too sappy, but I kind of considered him to be the punctuation mark at the end if a magical time. Gone far far too soon. RIP.

I honestly had no idea who Gordon Lightfoot was until I went on youtube and found that he had at least 3 songs that I recalled and enjoyed. I was born at the tail end of the 70's and have a lot of admiration for many of the songs of the 60's and 70's (minus disco and we all live in a yellow submarine by the Beetles). RIP to a unique voice that also had a way with words.

Hmph.....when I come back to Edmonton tommorrow from Rocky Mountain House area I'll have to go the boring old highway 2 route rather than the route I normally take which is highway 22 and then highway 39 as supposedly some of those areas were on evac alert from fires.

I live a few miles west of this fire, it has now caused the evacuation of Drayton Valley as of 11:09pm.

Residents are instructed to go to Stoney via Highway 624 as sections of 22 and 16 are closed.

Unreal this year just alerts multiple times a day. Some for the same spots from previous days.

This peat moss fire from last year that is still going is something else.

Boy do we ever get gouged in the city on gas prices. On my two trips to rocky mountain house area both rocky and sylvan lake were about 11 or 12 cents a litre cheaper, actually was 14 cents cheaper about a week ago in rocky.

I’m lucky that I work very near to a husky station that is 12-14 cents cheaper than the other stations on my drive. 131 right now when the place 10 minutes west was at 144

We have our seasonal at Trestle Creek. We were evacuated last weekend, were allowed to come back Wednesday, just got out there late yesterday afternoon, and have to evacuate AGAIN by 7 p.m. I think we'll just wait until November for the first snowfall and then go out again to be sure.;) Getting real tired of this shit. Hope people stay safe and it misses property.

P.S. Heard a rumour some of the fires may have been started by an active arsonist.
One them by someone who stole an ATV and let lit it on fire in a field.

Not worth a lot until they have to be replaced.
True that.

I teach at the high school in Evansburg so our families have been impacted likewise. I am sorry you have had to deal with that.

as for the rumour, I have heard the the ATV story as the cause of the Drayton Valley fire, but that happened last week. As for the “active arsonists” rumours I wouldn’t put stock into it. People are looking for some one or something to blame, and blaming a hypothetical arsonist for what ever nefarious reasons isn’t productive.

We had several families camp out at our place last night after the evacuation, but have now made their way to Edmonton.

Right now things are not looking good around Edson.

Thanks for the update. Yes, there is always some conspiracy theories out there. But no mistake, all were caused by humans, in some way shape or form. Whether it was an ATV racing through dry grass, a train sparking some brush, someone being stupid and having an open fire, or that time honoured method of stupidity of chucking a cigarette out the window or dropping it. The vast majority are likely caused by carelessness or outright stupidity, as per usual. I don't believe there has been any lightning of any significance to this point, so that's another big issue on the horizon as we head to storm season.

As for having to evacuate a seasonal, it really is a first world problem, but thanks for your comment. I feel sorry for those who have lost their homes or had to evacuate the place they live full time. Or in your case, affected your livelihood.

Hope both Edson and Drayton stay safe.

Truly terrifying how Northwestern Alberta just basically erupted into a series of uncontrolled wildfires all at once, on top of the things that were already going. So many small communities that are just nowhere near prepared to handle this, despite having seen previous examples of how quickly it can turn catastrophic. But what are they supposed to do? Climate change is scary as heck.

I hope all ya'll Oilers fans in these deep Oiler country areas are staying safe and keeping ahead of all the warnings and evacuations.

^ Neat idea and I use the same coffee containers. I have about 50 saved up now. Usually I just make simple vertical planters like this.

They work great here at our latitude and long summer days and maximize space. Using vertical gardens can increase your "grow area" significantly. look nice too.

This happened right in our neighborhood. Another catch and release tragedy that needs to stop. With the offender known as a dangerous offender and with several priors.

What is the purpose of a criminal justice system other than to protect the public from killers let out on the loose? A mother and child dead because of this.

The offender had several past convictions of assaulting children and was again released for an offense involving a child just a month ago.

This occurred in a School yard/playground. Where can families be considered safe?

I walk by here every other day. This tragedy happened at 5pm broad daylight.

Several kids and families traumatized for life seeing this.

"I can confirm he was known to police, having a history dating back to 2009 that included multiple charges of assault with a weapon, robbery, and an incident last year involving a random assault on a 12-year-old child at an LRT station," McFee said.

"This individual has been charged at least four times for assaulting minors. It seems like obviously a continued behaviour. There was a serious incident he was involved with in Winnipeg, I think back in 2009. So absolutely, he's got a history of this."

Disgusting. Should have been locked up for life long ago.

The social contract is done. How do you reinforce even the concept of family, having children when this happens? This is a suburban neighborhood, all families around, A school, a kids park, a hockey rink. This was a happy place once. Now the park is empty, expectedly, and kids scared to go to school. Parents scared to let their kids out of the yard.

Society exists in order to protect children and their families. Thats the social contract of any just society.

Countless tragic acts like this and how much does it take to reform catch and release atrocity?

Disgusting as well that the victims all identified and the offenders identity is being protected. Doesn't that say everything.

Does anyone have any solutions for ants? Ive had a few hills pop up in my yard seemingly overnight, and Id really rather do away with them.

Bonus points if youve got a pet friendly solution, as the dog tends to hoover up anything unfamiliar in the yard.

Hope people realize this when they cast their votes in the upcoming election and also when the federal one comes up.

Just imagine if this was in the U.S. It used to be a multi shooting every few months. Now, it's daily. And you hear some of the clowns politicians down there offering "prayer" as a solution. Yup, pray for the dead ones, you morons.
