Will fix everything
Had a strong first interview today. I made more in the '90's in retail.

If I get the offer, I'm taking it even if it is temporary for 2 months.

That's where I'm at. f*** this.

Its so bizarre that the talking heads talk about how strong the economy is and yet completely ignores that this experience is common.

Salaries are getting rolled back while cost of living skyrockets.

People are getting laid off for no reason other than companies want to drive their stock prices higher.

It's because the measures by which we as a society measure an economy are based on profit (to be shared by shareholders) and production output. It isn't based on payroll and when it is, they include the very top earners in the economy (those living large by soaking up profits in the lending loop, rentals and investment), it's shocking how little median income has changed in the US over the last 30 years.

It's fundamentally evil IMO.

Don't forget fundamentally untenable! Harder times are ahead, as we do everything in our collective power to hasten the find out stage

Shoulda got one game in
So the minion was accepted to another university, this one closer to home. They didn’t offer her any grants or scholarships to this one. So out of the 3 that she’s applied to, two have accepted her.

As for me, I’m trying to not smoke as much as I was. So I’ve supplemented it with vaping when I want one. It’s helping, as I’m now smoking a half pack a day instead of 1+ (varies if I’m drinking or not). Given enough time I may finally quit after 29 years of smoking.

Good for you for working at it! My parents both smoked for a time, one took almost 30 years to finally quit. It wasn't easy but it was worth it.

Any of you all been to Hunter Mountain? Want to go somewhere decent for snowboarding and not far away either. I'm in VA.
Used to camp in Slide Mt. Wilderness Area (great slice of the Catskills) and been to Hunter (Wyndham peak I think?) like, a decade ago. Seems good for skiing but pretty no-frills, nearby towns have some decent spots for food/entertainment but it's not a smorgasbord. We did a nearby VRBO or something so can't comment on the lodging.

If it's not too much more of a travel burden, Adirondacks High Peaks ranks way higher in my opinion. Absolutely gorgeous region and more varied slopes

Dude, Zyn was a lifesaver for me. Why go for a stinky deadly 8 minute nicotine experience when you can feel like John Wayne for an hour? Also, replace bad habits with good ones and rewards, yada yada. Seriously, was a long odd journey for me, quitting, so if I can help in any way lemme know. Transitioned from smokes to Zyn in a month, tops, after self-loathing for smoking for a decade.

Anyway- I’m a regular postman! Pay sucks, can’t stand how profit comes before people, but- it’s a career, now. Been wanting something I don’t hate, and honestly, I love the logistics of a slightly busy day. I’m just speed running my route, seeing how efficient I can be- we all got our ticks, that’s mine. I still like people, though, and everyone loves the mailman so it’s a friggin joy most days. You get people at their best.

But ya- covering the off days for 5 routes, as a start. Slightly better pay, plus I like to think my immediate management knows I can handle shit, thus the more difficult starting assignment. I could have ended up with a shitty route, day-after-day, and instead I’ll get variety.

I get to learn this all at the busiest time of the year, of course, but whatever- tl;dr I have a career I actually like now. Mailman. I will do my best to largely deliver accurately, that is my role. Part time Santa clause, when I know I’m delivering a toy for Christmas.

Got laid off last week. Need to vent a little. I'm really good at my job. But I made an enemy at work by asking questions about some shady shit. I thought I was insulated from his ire, and then, 2 months ago, we reorged, putting me in his reporting structure. He gave me a bullshit title and put me directly under his butt-sniffing "yes man". The bullshit title makes it easier to lay me off when layoffs come because layoffs always come in the form of removing job titles. So, as the only person in the whole company with my title, I was easy to remove. The severance is good, because I had been so senior, and that job was killing me, but I'm really angry. I can't really get out of my head. I know I should take some time to recharge, but I' afraid if I wait too long I'll be out of work a long time.

That sucks.

Hopefully you can process the frustration and move on sooner rather than later.

Good luck on the job search.

Shady enough to go above him to report it to someone? Shady enough to report it to an oversight body/law enforcement?

Just a thought.

Well, no, not really. The details are, he was propping up a 3rd party technology, even though mine was way f***ing better. And in the meeting where I questioned him, he fumbled the bag by admitting he wanted to aquire said company. It's not illegal, or even immoral, but his reasons are that he wants the AI team to be HIS AI team, so he can have absolute control.
A, he's mad that I tricked him into outing himself. B, he's mad that I probably prevented that from happening by kicking the shit out of their technology. And C, he's a bully, who routinely tries to physically intimidate people, but he's not used to tech people being able to handle themselves. People who look him in the eye and let him know if it gets physical, that'll work just fine. He hates that I'm not afraid of him. I've thought about connecting those dots for his boss, who is the president of a 5000 person division, but it would not do anything I want, and it'd definitely nullify my severance which is 6 months pay as a lump sum and a bunch of extra walking around money. This isn't a fight back scenario, because there's nothing to be won.

Edit: I should add, I don't think I want to work there anymore. He probably did me a favor, but I'm mad at the injustice of it. And I'm humiliated. So yeah, just trying to figure out how to handle it all.

Good luck Chain. It's almost like situations like this lead to the collapse of the status quo. Next thing you know, some executive gets shot on the street and the country applauds. Juat to pick a random hypothetical.

I wasn't so much thinking about getting your job back. Probably for the best to just move forward and leave that turd of a human behind.

Or make up a time capsule after the end of your severance for his boss and HR. *shrug*

Immediate reaction was they have to be an improvement by default, but let's wait and see.
Fanatical head-choppers displacing a murderous, authoritarian dictator is highly unlikely to be an improvement. Ask the Yazidi.

In that part of the world, the lesser of two evils, even a truly evil one, is generally as good as one can expect.

That sucks, man. At least you've got some decent severance to see you through.

Sounds like you have quality technical skills. Good luck with the job hunt. Might want to just step back, relax, and evaluate for the next week or so.

Lemme guess ... your new title was Special Projects?

Pretty close. "Modeling Leader", but my intended job function was "Special Projects."

Yeah. I'm not expecting big things, but it does seem like the rebel leader has distanced himself from some of the more extreme actions in the group's history

"I'm sorry we repeatedly gang-raped innocent Yazidi girls and executed their shackled brothers and fathers for being kuffar."

Paint me unconvinced.

Hey, is this "politics"? Asking for a friend.
