Opposing Fan Experience

FWIW I used the search function and didn’t get many hits that I felt were relevant to my topic:

I’m a Wild fan in Oklahoma, which makes it hard to experience a home game, however I have tickets to their game in Dallas on the 27th.

I’ve never been an away fan at any professional sporting event, but we’ve all seen videos of altercations between fans, I’m not trying to get beat up lol.

I’m kind of nervous about my wife and I wearing Wild gear. Would we be better off wearing neutral clothing?

I’m probably overreacting as I’m somewhat of an anxious/worrisome person in general.

Can anyone offer some insight on their experience in general as an opposing team fan, especially in Dallas?

You'll get chirped of course but as long as you're not being aggressive towards anyone, you'll be fine. I've seen several Habs/Bruins fans come to Leaf games, nothing happens really. People laugh and talk and what not, trash talk a bit but I don't recall ever seeing someone just straight up attack the opposing fans or get aggressive with them.

There was one incident, some dude in a Nordiques jersey came to the Leafs/Avs game 2 years ago ? The game Matthews scored the hat trick, him and his dad were obscenely drunk and talking trash about Toronto/Kadri, even though it got heated, no punches were thrown. But the Leafs fan did, accidentally on purpose, spill his beer/popcorn on them when the game ended as he was "celebrating"

lol, you'll be perfectly fine. It's one of more sedate crowds in the league toward other teams; fans and it's very common for other fanbases to have large presences since it's a town of transplants. Hell wear a Wild 3rd jersey and people will just think you've got a North Stars sweater on.

Probably my favorite "Enemy territory" fan encounter was the older guy sitting in front of me at the Pens/Wings game last year. He kept trying to fist bump me every time the Pens scored, so I'd egg him back on when the Wings scored and do the same.

After the Pens won I asked if he wanted Jeff Petry back. He said the Pens would probably just trade him again. I said that's fine as long as they got him the f*** out of Detroit. We both laughed and left.

There's assholes everywhere, it's not common to actually get into fights lol but you and your wife will be shit talked almost certainly, if it's not something you can handle, don't wear them (I'm not trying to word this in a way that makes you sound soft, it's totally understandable). As I've aged I've been less likely to wear them just because I want to enjoy the game in peace. Also because I go to a lot of games in Buffalo and Toronto I just feel pity for the fans.

Also went to a Wings/Blackhawks game in Chicago way back before they booted Detroit to the East.

We didn't know Standing Room in Chicago sucked balls (You sit behind raised nosebleed seats) because Joe Louis' SRO was actually pretty good. Hawks fans chirped us but when the shootout came they were encouraging us to get into the stairways so we could actually see.

Vast majority of fans aren't assholes and are there to have fun. It's the few dipshits that get the attention.

Besides some mild mannered chirping, I think you'll be okay.

However, some barns you just stay away from.. Montreal, Toronto.. Boston in particular I've heard horror stories from

If you're wearing the other team's gear, and that team is, you know, actually playing, that's completely normal and nobody will bother you.

I have seen people just try to stir the shit. For example, wearing a Rangers jersey to Islanders vs Sharks.

But that's just acting out of pocket. If you act out of pocket, you're gonna find trouble regardless of who you're supporting. The vast majority of fights I've seen are between people rooting for the same team.

Shouldn't be an issue. The only people that seem to have issues are assholes. Honestly, one of my best experiences at games have been interacting with Canucks fans in Calgary, somehow ended up with tickets in the middle of a busload of Canucks fans and it was a blast.

I frequently go to opposing teams games by myself and wear my teams jerseys, let's just say hope your team wins and if they do be as quiet about it as possible, if your team loses you will in all likely get smack talked on the way out, wether you choose to respond to the smack talk is up to you.

I don't mean to alarm you, but 94% of our nation's murders take place in Dallas
When did Texas secede?

I was just there a few weeks back...Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, Galveston...Didn't need to show any 'paper' or a passport

On a more serious note - Dallas has a good group of fans...Was at both the Bruins and Ducks games...MANY Boston fans in attendance and a fair number of Ducks fans wore their colors...Not a single fan was given trouble (that I had witnessed)...All in all Dallas is a fun crowd that love their hockey :thumbu:

I've been to games in about a dozen NHL cities (not Nashville) and have never seen home/away sections before.

To answer OP question: wear your team's jersey, have fun without being obnoxious and you'll be fine.

I was gonna say, i've been to many games in Nashville and have never seen a home/away section.

As for OP, unless its a rare case where you encounter a drunk a*****e trying to start stuff, as long as youre not being an ass yourself you should be fine outside of some chirps here and there. I've done more than half of the arena's in the NHL as an away fan and i've yet to have a bad experience.
