So Cal
The Los Angeles Kings are finally an NHL powerhouse. After many years of mediocracy, the team stands alone atop the mountain. The last three seasons have yielded three straight trips to the Conference final, and two championships. The players are excited about the future, as the team looks to be on the cusp of a dynasty. The long-suffering Los Angeles Kings fans no longer have to spend time explaining their allegiance to a losing team, and trying to put into context, all the great moments the team has had, despite never having won the Cup. It sounds like an ideal situation, but there is a dark side.

Piss poor writing, utter garbage, typical blog-conclusion with a tiny sample size.

Some truth here. I remember when Gretzky came we all thought, if we can keep these fans we would get more respect for the sport. I think the shift really started when the Ducks came. At first we thought of them as our little brother. We would go to games and explain the rules to the soccer moms who were taking the team out for cheap games. Then they got better than us. Look at the number of times they finished ahead of us. We started mocking their fans because we told them the rules. Then they won the cup, before us.
We called them bandwagon fans. Now we laugh because many of those fans have left. Let us not scare the new fans away. Then we have made them bandwagon fans and we are no better than the Ducks

I like the article. The writer made a solid point. I don't like the term bandwagon fans and I've seen it a lot. Hopefully new Kings fans will consistently feel welcome.

@RonM11 such incidents are commonplace. I see them all over social media and at games. All the time. Author nailed it.

@frozenroyalty Social media is one thing, games are another. I go to every home game and playoff game and have never witnessed it. (cont.)

@RonM11 I see it all the time at Staples Center when I walk the concourses.

I get the sentiment but painting everyone with the same brush is absolute garbage. It's unfortunately the same thing that you will see at all LA sporting events when teams start succeeding and waxing nostalgic about a previous era of fan is dishonest. It's also ironically eating itself in that the author is basically painting fans of a past era as better fans. Sorry, this article is tripe, and I don't care who it's written by, it's poorly supported, overly generalized, and undermines its own point. And I get the sentiment, that in itself is well-intentioned, but it's god-awfully articulated. Who the hell is this clown?

I meant let us not scare our new fans away. Because if we do then we have are no better than Ducks fans. They seem to have an ebb and flow to their fans.
They call the "new" fans (ok all Kings fans) band wagoners.
If we can keep these fans and make them life long fans maybe Kings hockey will make the news more than Raiders football

I rue the day when anecdotal evidence becomes appropriate backing for 'real' journalism.

I saw a Ducks fan get beat up over a stick at Honda Center on TV. Those Ducks fans are irrationally violent and Honda Center must be totally unsafe for visiting fans. What horrible people. Ducks fans of the 90s never did that.

I have enjoyed the last ten Raider seasons immensely. :) Keep the bad news coming on the Raiders. :)

To the point, I know what you mean. When I go to Ducks home games (mostly against the Kings), I am shocked at how little they support their own team by going to the games. It seems as though at least 30% to 40% of all Ducks seats were purchased by people with the sole intention of selling their seat to the highest bidder. Even in the playoffs...2nd round, at that. I'm ****ing amazed, just amazed how little the community supports that team.

I saw what you did there. :)

I think you would absolutely eclipse me as a Twitter troll.

Meanwhile, there is no way I'm going to argue with a guy that says he witnesses it "all the time." I am always walking the concourses between periods, just have never, ever seen this behavior.

Now, if we are talking about abhorrent behavior by fans of other teams, well...

I have quite a number of friends who are Kings fans. I don't know a single person that is bitter about "bandwagon fans". Most of us welcome it. We want there to be no doubt who is the most popular hockey team in (Southern) California and I personally embrace all hockey fans. It's the greatest sport on earth. The only time I see the term "bandwagon" next to the Kings is from bitter Ducks fans.

I personally think the writer is out to lunch but I guess that is their opinion.

Just a little history. The first generation of Kings fans were built during a 1976 divisional round playoff series against the Boston Bruins. Boston was heavily favored, but the Kings extended the series to the full 5 games before dropping the deciding game 3-0.

The first generation was built in 1976? How about 1967? I think this guy is just bitter because he is a first generation bandwagoner trying to lump himself in with the OG's. :sarcasm:

lol strange article

the only time i hear the term "bandwagon" are from jealous, mentally weak fans of other teams trying to belittle our success... like ranger fans, shark fans or even duck fans.

Frankly, who cares. The more "bandwagon fans" the better. It just means more "friends" to celebrate current and future championships ;)

@RonM11 Had I given 20 examples, it would be a "Rant". Sorry if you missed the spirit of what I was trying to say; that's probably my fault

Whatever.

Engaging this guy in a twitter conversation is probably a waste of time anyway. How do I explain all the inaccuracies of the article in the space of 140 characters? Like Buddy said above, I also had observed that inaccuracy about the "first generation" but it would take like 10 twitter posts to explain to the guy why his IQ has apparently not reached 3 digits.

Just don't have the time and patience. If he is going to admit fault at trying to convey his article's "spirit" then the hell with it. Waste of time.

News flash, bandwagon fans are every where. Pittsburgh gets hot, bandwagoners jump on, same with Detroit, Chicago, NY, Boston, Philly, Colorado, etc. This isn't exclusive to LA or just hockey. Look at where the Bulls fans went, probably cheered on the Heat the last couple of years.

It is the worst 10% of a group that defines the entire group. Except on line
If one person on line calls someone a bad name, then everyone who had ever been on line calls everyone else a bad name.
Oddly the reverse is not true. If 1000 people call 1000 people a nice name, no one hears it.

^^^^^^

It's amazing how it happens all the time in all sports yet people still act as if it is a special case for one team or one sport.

Small sample sizes of fans give the entire fanbase a bad name. When I went to Philly this year I found them to be nothing more than super passionate fans. I wasn't heckled or anything. AND the Kings won. So, yea. I never put too much stock in one fan or two fans being idiots and/or being bandwagoners.

So basically classless Kings fans are classless? Sounds about right. :sarcasm:

I've been to all of 2 Kings games at Staples or the Forum for that matter (games 3 and 4 of the finals in 2012) and one "home" game at Dodgers stadium. I've found every Kings fan I met during both trips incredibly accommodating and more very friendly. Never been called a bandwagon fan or anything even close to that and most are shocked and admire my dedication when I explain I'm a lifelong Kings fan that grew up in Minnesota and that's why I can't get to many games here. Anywhere else I go I get accused of being a bandwagon fan but LA it's never even come close to happening. That's my experience, now can I get paid for "journalism" too?
