Blue Jays GDT: Opening Day!

Heh, i really wonder if Vlad doesnt hit a HR by at the time of his presser when they get home, someone should ask Shatkins - Can we get a refund? LOL.

They're swinging the bats pretty well to start the year i would say but the power just isn't there yet and i'm not particularly sure why. (Team OPS is a bit low, which makes sense given this team doesn't walk all that much)

Pitching has been remarkably good but given how the ebbs and flow of baseball work, you can't expect them to all be this good, all the time. Eventually it's going to hit a rough patch and the offense is going to be expected to find those home runs that can't seem to atm.

Yeah but they are mostly hititng singles which you need several to generate a single run.

And it seems most of the hits they get are earlier in the games, and either score a run or two or don't score. Few times they've had pitchers on the ropes and failed to get anything.

Homers are automatic runs. this team used to mash, even in shitty years. A homer is always a fun play and with runners on base changes a game quickly. Jays just never do that anymore, and the games are a slog to watch for the most part when they are leading by the skin of their teeth hoping the bullpen wont blow it, or when a starter is winning by a run they just cant get him any more support.

They get on base on a good clip, and did so last year, but the lack of power is truly frustrating to watch as a fan. I enjoy a good pitching duel, dont get me wrong, but homers are fun too!

You don't if you run the bases. In 94 the Expos did not have that much power. But they were running the base. Every time there was a runner at 3rd and 1st with less than 2 outs they would automatically steal the 2nd and if the catcher would throw to 2nd they would steal the home plate on the throw. With a runner at 1st and 2nd less than 2 outs they would very often steal 3rd and 2nd (to avoid double play). Lot of hit and run. In a game where you have 10 hits and only one HR you can't have just 1 stolen base. And frankly that's one the coach only Vlad and Kirk can't steal on the team.

To be fair that's also like 30 years ago too. Game has changed quite a bit.

The Royals kinda did it in 14-15 but even then it wasn't just speed. They had some elite bat on ball guys

That was a different era in baseball. like 80's in hockey.

Not that many teams run as a strategy these days. Jays have had some fast players even in recent years, they just dont coach or practice to run. And you'd think with the bigger bases and limiting pitchers throwing to check runners, it would increase, but nope.
