So Cal
Apologies if this is already being discussed in another thread.

Today we saw a pretty big bunch of players cut from the training camp roster:

Forwards—Kenny Agostino, Joey Anderson, Justin Brazeau, Rourke Chartier, Pierre Engvall, Tyler Gaudet, Scott Sabourin, Nic Petan
Defencemen—Mac Hollowell, Teemu Kivihalme, Timothy Liljegren, Martin Marincin, Calle Rosen
Goaltender—Michael Hutchinson (cleared waivers)

So it looks like the following 26 players are left. Who will the last cuts be and what will Wednesday’s season opening lineup look like? My guess is the following.

Thornton-Matthews-Marner
Vesey-Tavares-Nylander
Mikheyev-Kerfoot (assuming healthy)-Hyman
Barabanov-Spezza-Simmonds

Brodie-Rielly
Holl-Muzzin
Lehtonen-Bogosian

Andersen
Cambell

scratches/taxi squad: Robertson, Boyd, Dermott, Sandin, Dell
cut to Marlies?: Brooks

Any thoughts?

dermott is practicing in place of mikko on the bottom pair from what i am reading on twitter

Likely just getting his reps in. I'm sure we'll see a fair bit of rotation in the bottom pairing, aswell as the bottom 6 this year with such a condensed schedule.

Thornton Matthews Marner
Vesey Tavares Nylander
Soup Kerfoot Hyman
Simmonds Spezza Barabanov

Rielly Brodie
Muzzin Holl
Lethonen Bogosian
Dermott

Anderson
Campbell

Is my guess on the 21 man roster to start.

Interesting Brooks and Boyd beat out Engvall and Anderson for taxi squad spots.

Likely to be for cap reasons regarding Engvall. Brooks, and possibly Boyd too, offers the positional versatility (C/W) that Anderson doesn't.

yes i agree, i also think anderson is best served with the marlies when they start up. still alot of promise in him. and i really think he needs to play. not sure he gets in the lineup over robertson or boyd. as for engvall, i think its mostly for cap reasons. although he didnt have the strongest of showings on saturday, despite scoring. He gave up the puck at least 3-4 times in his own zone. one of which lead directly to a goal against

I think Dermott will start the season for cap reasons. We don't actually have enough space to run 22 players and it looks like they don't want to risk losing Dell to waivers and seem to like Barabanov (only other waiver exempt player) on the 4th line. They'll probably rotate Boyd in for Barabanov in order to get Lehtonen in at times but it should only take a month or so to accrue enough space for a 22nd roster spot.

Ya i would not be surprised either way to be honest. i thought Travis had a good showing in saturday's scrimmage. Maybe they want Mikko to work on getting used to the smaller sheet a bit more. he was not given the luxury of a full camp to adjust. I think even Mikko mentioned that its a big change. Im sure there has been ongoing dialog between the d-core on how things will shake out throughout the season. Im sure they will all get in at some point to showcase their stuff either by injuries or illness. Hard to get discouraged being on the outside looking in when you see the depth they now have. It would be entirely different in years past when Marincin was put in place of some of these guys

Until concerns about losing Dell popped up I thought the Leafs would run a 20 man roster with Lehtonen going back and forth to the taxi squad on off days or days he wasn't playing to accrue as much cap space as possible.

Until concerns about losing Dell popped up I thought the Leafs would run a 20 man roster with Lehtonen going back and forth to the taxi squad on off days or days he wasn't playing to accrue as much cap space as possible.

the only hesitation there is that it might not make lehtonen too happy to only earn AHL $$$ for most of the year, which would hurt our chances of re-signing him.

Add in Brooks as 5th on taxi squad
Swop Muzzy for Rielly on 1st pair D
If Engvall clears then he becomes 6th on taxi squad tomorrow

If they keep Dell -- as appears likely -- then I don't think they have room for a 22nd player until they accumulate some cap space.

With 12 forwards (Barabanov as the 12th man), six D and three goalies; and Brooks, Boyd, Robertson, Sandin and Lehtonen on the taxi squad, my thumbnail sketch leaves $566,509 in cap space.

It looks like a minor miracle that they can complete a roster, keep Dell and have a little bit of cap space to accumulate along the way. I guess someone crunching the numbers really did have a plan.

As the season progresses, if all goes well they can keep the taxi squad guys all together with the NHL team, and dress a few of them here and there as cap space permits.

PS. Corrected math error.

Engvall was assigned to the Marlies today, and I don't think he will start out on the taxi squad.

Brooks, Boyd, Robertson, Sandin and Lehtonen havent been assigned to the minors yet. Unless Brooks or Boyd were claimed off waivers tomorrow, I think that's your taxi squad on Wednesday.

I liked Engvall's game on Saturday, and that just shows how little I know. The coach singled him out for criticism -- he "expects more" -- and I guess that foreshadowed his trip to the minors.

Its hard not to like the guy, though.

Kinda surprised Engvall was not picked for taxi squad ... at 6ft5 with speed I would have

Me too.

Beyond that, I'm also surprised he didn't make the NHL roster either.
That was a CAP related and contract related decision much like Lehtonen
purely as a player Engvall over Spezza today
purely as a player Lehtonen over Holl today
and that is after only me seeing Blue and White game
but CAP and contract are real issues and we don't want to lose Holl as a 7th D and we don't want to disrespect Spezz
so I don't bother with a lot of this stuff as Keefe doing what he is told by higher ups which Babs never did

Isn't 7th D a discussion between Lehtenen, Dermott and Sandin?

I do not think Holl is a part of this discussion at this point.

I am beyond irritated to see fck Vesey on the second line knowing that Robertson would be so damn good sniping from there.

I can't be the only one feeling this way?
