They were playing with themselves?
Losing to Chicago, one could say they were.

They did overpay Bob at the time. But guys sign there on the relative cheap at a far higher rate then they do in Toronto, where it seems they only sign at premium prices.Bobrovsky wasn’t exactly a discount when he signed there. Even this year he has the highest cap hit among goalies (not counting Price on LTIR).
The tax thing is overblown a bit. Non being able to deduct local and state taxes from federal taxes helps the no tax state teams a bit, but it has more to do with those teams cycling up at the same time. All of Tampa’s core guys were drafted and stayed. Florida drafted Barkov and Eckblad high. They got Bob have giving him more than anywhere else and having one of the few Russian enclaves in the area. Same for Huberdeau and they aren’t getting Tkachuk if they can’t offer him to Calgary.
They’ve brought in players but that has come after having success and starting to be a contender. Same with Dallas. No one coming to Florida if they are still owned by Alan Cohen in the cheap giving away tickets.
We did this for Timo and 90% of this board cries about Meier and his deal.
Outside the big stars Toronto has brought in a lot of vets on the cheap. The stars have maxed out because they brought in the highest paid free agent at the time in terms of aav and then overpaid Nylander on an rfa deal. That sent the message to Matthews and Marner that the team would pay top dollar no matter what. Wasn’t really a tax thing. They did overpay Bob at the time. But guys sign there on the relative cheap at a far higher rate then they do in Toronto, where it seems they only sign at premium prices.
Floridas path wasn’t easy but it was certainly front loaded…in a normal playoff system you would expect the Conference Finals to be tougher than the first round, never mind the Leaf seriesThinking about Carolina as a fluke weak team is the false understanding of what is going on in nhl. Thinking about Florida that they had an easy way to the SCF is the same false understanding.
They played seven games against leafs. Its fun to joke about leafs but they are strong talented team. At least they were. With some problems of course. They are making steps. At least they did before saying goodbye to Marner. Wsh took many years before he played in ECF. They were a good team before it.Floridas path wasn’t easy but it was certainly front loaded…in a normal playoff system you would expect the Conference Finals to be tougher than the first round, never mind the Leaf series
June 4th if Edmonton wins. June 7th if Sallas comes back to extend the series. When does the SCF begin?
