I was surprised that Edmonton has done so well despite losing Ekholm, but their PK is brutal without him.
In the 23-24 playoffs the Oilers had the best PK in the playoffs, by far.
After tonight, they have the 2nd worst PK in 24-25 playoffs.
This includes tonight’s 3-4 meltdown.
23-24:
1st Rd (4-1 vs LAK) 0 PP GA
2nd Rd (4-3 vs VAN) 3 PP GA
WCF (4-2 vs DAL) 0 PP GA & 1 SH GF
SCF (3-4 vs FLA) 1 PP GA & 2 SH GF VS 24-25:
1st Rd (4-2 vs LAK) 8 PP GA
2nd Rd (4-1 vs VGK) 3 PP GA
WCF (0-1 vs DAL) 3 PP GA
This is what happens when they went from these top PK defensemen:

Rates/60
To this year, after losing 3 of their top 4 PK defensemen (this includes tonight):

The Darnell Nurse redemption arc took a hit in these playoffs. The Nurse/Ceci pairing had done shockingly well on the PK in the 23-24 playoffs. They had a +2 GD in 28:50 minutes, giving up zero PP GA while being on ice for 2 SH GF.
(Ironically Ceci is on Dallas this year.)
Putting Troy Stecher in for Ty Emberson hasn’t helped things either lol.
In tonight’s game, the new Nurse/Stecher pairing gave up 2 PP GA on 4 shots in 1:45 minutes.
I love Adam for what he did for us in 2012 but I hope Edmonton gets swept. Absolutely can't root for a team with off the ice scum bags like Kane and Perry.
I think the Oilers will try to find someone like we did with Markstrom last offseason, if they don’t win the cup this year.
I see no reason to back down from my Oilers in 7 prediction unless Pickard is done for the series.
Skinner is more than bad enough to be the difference between the Oilers winning this series in 6 and losing it in 5-6.
They’d be really stupid to being Skinner back. I actually thought he was 1-2 years younger than he is, so they should have no problem letting him walk, but he’s still an RFA for one more year this offseason lol.
Edmonton has been involved in so many crazy, high scoring see-saw games in the playoffs during this McDavid-Draisaitl era. I remember a series against Calgary - unsure when it was, but I think maybe the year Calgary won the Presidents Trophy - when game after game was like 7 to 6 with half a dozen goals and lead changes in the third period of back to back games.
Just my impression and not systematic, haven't researched it, but it seems to be the current club's identity. Game one in the finals at Sunrise was a strange one last year that they should have won. This year they had wild finish in round one against Los Angeles, didn't they. It's like playoff hockey isn't the same when they play it. Frankly it's more entertaining than usual. Don't miss the third period when these guys play.
I'm staying off anything that mentions the NBA until the next game. Just so disappointing. Honestly, it's on the coach. They were up 17 with less than 5 minutes left. You knew they were going to start chucking 3s and they were doing well without Brunson on the court. The coach should have went with a unit that could defend the perimeter, not have a unit out there that was getting torched all game. At the very least, I keep McBride in who has been shooting lights out and can defend better than Brunson. Just terrible coaching by a coach that had his top unit on against Boston up by almost 40 with like 8 minutes left in the series. He is very thick-headed.
