OOT scoreboard 2025 playoff edition

 Who cares about the reg season? Even more worthless when talking about the defending champs. Championship hangover anyone.....and a non division/rival opponent on top of that.

Devs were 2-2 vs the Canes this season. 2-1-1 in 2022/23. How'd those playoff series go again? Even better, that Canes team that embarrassed the Devs went on to get SWEPT by the very Florida Panthers you are mocking. Sooooooo

If you thought Schmid and Vanecek were Cup winning goalies, that's your own issue. They were bound to lose in the 2023 playoffs based on that alone regardless of the roster they had. They almost lost Round 1 to the Rags because of it but Akira somehow matched Igor by the grace of god or else the Devils would've been out in 4 or 5 to them. They could've had the 95 Devils in front of them, they were getting embarrassed regardless when you get below .900 save in today's NHL. Hate people who use the 22/23 Devils post season results as some sort of gotcha towards this core when the skaters weren't the main issue that series.

Sure seems weird for Rantanen/the Rantanen camp to mention the culture and that it didn't feel right being in Carolina....completely omitting the contract piece if that was the case. Canes alluded to similar.

The easy answer is we couldn't agree on terms and leave it as that. That isn't what happened on either side. Then of course you can debate/reference Rantanen's Canes' production combined with interviews where it looked like someone shot his dog.

Dougie situation isn't relevant because of their team structure at the time and the very reason(s) the Devs are likely trying to move him right now with 3 years left. DUH.

It's weird you guys aren't bothering to use the real reason for the cheapo Canes stigma. Guentzel (edit: might have missed this on your OP initially). Difference is now they need to backfill Necas and have the space to do it...which is why they went for Rantanen knowing his public contract demands...and why they tried to trade for Marner allegedly when it didn't workout.

We'll see what happens though. Odds are Marner doesn't go to the Canes obviously, but that's my call.

Them going after Marner would be dumb and foolish so I hope they do it anyway, their goal scoring dries up because of having no alpha superstar to put the team on their back + goalies this late in the playoffs aren't going ot be intimated by their shitty ass shot generation system. Until Rod fixes that, they're never winning shit.

I read their board at the time and Canes fans also thought our goaltending was a major issue.

I still remember one commenting that the Devils were going nowhere with either of those goalies, and they were right.

As much as Schmid will be a folk hero of sorts for his R1 heroics v NYR and probably should never buy a beer when a Devils fan is around, he was minced meat going into the series v Carolina. The Rags simply didn't test him like Carolina was going to in the following series. The move for Fitz after 2023 was getting a goalie that summer ironically enough Helly would've been a disaster too judging by his playoffs with Winnipeg but maybe a Kuemper type, telling Ruff to go upstairs or go find a HC job if that's what he wanted elsewhere in the league and promote Brunette.

Carolina will always be an issue for teams that don't have clean breakouts or goaltending, we don't have either and thus they always dickslap us in the playoffs/regular season. This year series was an outlier because were outmatched from start but in general lol

They wanted to pay Rantanen. They tried, including trading for him knowing how much he wanted...he just didn't like the vibes lol. Dougie was a completely different scenario and not relevant.
We don’t know what they offered, but given their history it probably was a ‘cult discount’ deal and sometimes neither side wants to admit it was about money - the player almost never wants to admit that and any team that trades for a rental won’t admit that either if that was the case cause it would make them look stupid and cheap. I mean he settled on the vibe of Dallas landing in the airport lol

Put it this way I’ll believe they give out a top five contract in the league (or even at their position) when I see it.

I'd rather have the Canes win this series, but a whopping 16 consecutive losses in the conference final would be very funny.

Wow, I did not expect that result last night. Huge for Florida to take game 1.
florida is absolutely built for the playoffs

you dont win the playoffs by being nice and not playing rough and flirting with questionable hits.
The extremely aggressive way Florida is pinching this year to pin the opposition in their end or turn the puck over during their attempted exit is even more pronounced than last year. The strong side defenseman is pinching down along the wall and the far side of the ice defenseman is charging towards the opposite corner on a diagonal as far as the face off dot. It’s a radical swarm to pin the puck in nearly as if they are on a penalty kill. When they give up an odd man rush, well there’s Bobrovsky.

Their system requires big and fast guys who can physically win their battles when the collisions come. Again they are reading off each other 5 on 5 as if they are on the penalty kill and they are playing it very well.

Edmonton extended them last year because they had guys, led by McDavid, who could break the press one on one. Can Carolina?

Again another analogy would be the full court press in basketball where you break it by going over the top.

oh see also another kicking motion drama last night. just allow the play already at this point! there was zero risk to player safety with that play last night just let kicking motion please

which btw if that was the rule we probably would've won back to back cups against the av's

goal of the sport should be allowing as many goals as possible not finding ways to take them away

I don't disagree the rules on the kicking should be revisited but as it stands now, Aho's goal violated the rules. What he did was a kick. That move is used routinely in soccer. Ultimately it doesn't matter but the league needs to figure out what they want to define as a kick and if they want to add a situational component to address the safety concern.

Comparing a broken version of the lineup to the one that was more successful doesn't work for me. You also missed my point which was that NJ wasn't pushed around this season and it seemed to have some tanglble benefits. Hischier didn't get dragged around the ice by Tkachuk this season. Not one Panther pulled any shenanigans. Ease up on the mocking emojis and so on.

That should be the goal of replay as a whole in any sport, along with a strict two minute maximum to come up with a ruling. I don't want five minutes of poring over a few pixels in hockey or soccer as a rationale to overturn something. Ostensibly, the rule is that the original call takes precedent, but sometimes it doesn't come across as that.

Florida will have to be better next game, as they were leaky on defense a times. Bob looked great and came up with some big stops.

Would love to see the Canes get swept for the 4th time in a row in the Conference Finals !
Florida has been really good at adjusting and upping their level of play as series go on. It’s a huge reason they won against Toromto. When they got challenged in the first couple of games they responded and after a close call in OT of going down 3 zip they totally took over.

I thus don’t expect they will change much unless and until Carolina really challenges them and gives them a reason to have to respond. They will counter punch in effect. I won’t be surprised to see the Canes win game 2 or at least push back much more vigorously.

Carolina will definitely need to finish their chances more efficiently. And as they are not generally an efficient scoring team, I don’t expect them to win this series.
