Has anyone ever considered the Leafs roster just isn’t that good? They have an Auston Matthews with an apparent ongoing wrist issue and a declining Tavares. That leaves Marner and Nylander as their stars at full strength, that’s it. They chose to spend big money on the shiny object seven years ago and not once since then have they had a true number one d-man on the roster. Most of their d-core has been mid as f***. I’m not even sure I can name off the top of my head who they have playing on their back end other than Morgan Reilly. Ditto for bottom six forwards.

They’ve been a poorly constructed roster for the entirety of the time that core has been in place.

They also have like zero swagger. I think players wearing a Maple Leafs sweater know they are destined to always lose. When was the last time they had any star players whatsoever do something amazing in the playoffs?

Matthews strikes me as being one Marlboro away from giving less of a shit than Jay Cutler.

I think their core just doesn't have it

I’m not defending the leafs but I also can acknowledge it’s pretty shitty timing to have their window open up in the same division the bolts panthers and bruins all have/had their windows open too.

It goes back to similar situation as parise suter with the wild. How as a franchise do you not sign a super star that wants to come home and be a hero? It’s pretty funny that in both cases neither player is willing to take a home team discount so they could add to the rosters.

I can’t fault the leafs for their roster build out it’s the way the cards were dealt their franchise players are similar types all got big paydays because they popped off at the right time. They couldn’t trade a marner or nylander they automatically lose that trade and it’s hard to make that trade when they are putting up 100pt seasons in the standings.

Someone replied to this post with I don’t think their core has it and I see a lot of this core with the devils core come playoff time. I really don’t see the heart and drive and determination to leave it all on the ice every shift to win every board battle part of the reason I don’t fault Fitz for adding the grit he added. Just that they didn’t produce offensively hopefully he gets it right this time
