Caps are good. Caps are not "best team in the league" good. Without the shooting luck they're worse than the Devils (and that's before we get into the "is their on ice performance even sustainable with their personnel?")
Problem is that they've still got Ovechkin waiting in the wings, and I don't think he's going to take too kindly to his season being derailed.

They have 5 players above 20% in shooting percentage and 3 others above 15%. They're scoring on between 1 out of every 7 and one out of every 8 shots. If the season ended today, their shooting percentage would be 12% higher than any team's last season and nearly 15% higher than anyone's in 2022-23.

They're good. I do not think they've suddenly figured out how to score 4 goals a game.

Their shooting is obviously hot but they're also not even top 5 in goals scored above expected.

Neither the caps nor the wild are as good as their record indicates. Same thing with Jets were going crazy there for a while and they’ve slowed down, same thing will eventually happen with the caps and the wild.

To be honest, it seems every playoff team has some glaring flaws, minus perhaps Vegas.

Their defensive core is really good.

Carlson, Sandin, Fehervary, Roy, Chychrun, TVR.

That's 6 studs.
Sandin? TVR? Roy? As a group they feature some talent of course but 6 studs? I guess it depends upon your definition. Take a look at those PDOs. I see a decent amount of good fortune there, not that they aren't a good team, but I'm seeing a lot of buy in and good coaching. That works in the regular season but not so much in the playoffs. This is pretty much peak Caps. Props to them for rebuilding what was an aging team on the fly. That's really impressive.

Their dcore is similar to ours

Roy more or less Pesce
Fehervary more or less Siegs
Carlson more or less Hamilton
TVR more or less Dillon (this one isn't as good stylistically or situationally but we ball)
Sandin more or less Kovy (in terms of a guy who's been lights out this year but I'm still not sure that's who they 100% are)

I don't think Chyrchun is as good as Luke but in terms of the role they fill similar as well

The Capitals are tremendous, yeah maybe they'll falter a bit with their shooting percentage but their backend is one of the best in the league. They deserve full marks for where they are in the standings. They're also the poster child for a successful re-tool, NYR should be looking to copy them, PIT are too far gone, a few other teams in the league should take notes as well.

Their shooting is obviously hot but they're also not even top 5 in goals scored above expected.

And that's where they win games like 2-1 or 3-2 because their defense is absurdly rock solid, like last night.

critical support for the Ottawa senators for two reasons:

  • It might crank Boston
  • It will eliminate any chance Brady gets traded to the Rangers (I’m not afraid of him as a player, I just don’t like when the fans are happy)

Let's have a laugh at the Red Wings, who had Scott Laughton score 4 goals (yes 4!!!) against them last night. Kind of expected though, Laughton was red hot coming into this one, with a total of 3 goals on the year.

Cherish that fluke regular season win against us Detroit! That will be the bright spot of your 24-25 season.

Also very nice to see the Canes in a bit of a rut.
