OOT Scoreboard 2024 25 Season Part II

Crazy. And he would've done it earlier without lockouts and anything close to something like this era during the '10s.

I'd be annoyed for most other fanbases but f*** the Isles. Die already.

Covid shortened the seasons too.

Marty would also have been a decent chunk over 700 games too if he didn't have two half year lockouts and 1 full year lockout.

f***ing lockouts are the worst. All greedy f***s.

I don't even think the fans booed Gary, at least not much.

But they did boo Gretzky's shout out to the league's referees.

He goes out of his way to be classy a lot of times, but I'm not sure if he would have worked that in to his speech today if he were sober. So maybe he is sloshed?

Yeah, I can’t see Marty’s record ever getting touched. Not in our lifetimes anyway.

It would take a freak to come along and have his durability, longevity and for the stigma on goalie tandems to go away. But I think teams see the need for their goalies to get rest over a long season that it will be impossible for anyone to play 70 games a year across multiple seasons the way Marty did.

Ever is a long time

Fortunately, I trust Marty Walsh more than the past heads of the NHLPA. I don't think we'll see one this time.

The last couple didn't seem to care much. Fehr didn't seem to care about sexual assault on players too much, so I didn't expect him to care about NHL or MLB lockouts. I'm just surprised they didn't lockout last time, but it was during covid when they renewed the CBA and I'm thinking they probably compromised a bit more due to lost attendance and games that were beyond the control of either side.

I'm not trying to disparage Gretzky, but it is pretty insane that he didn't even score 100 goals in the last 5 years of his career.

But I think it was goal 700 that Ovechkin scored 5 years ago last month at Prudential Center. And we're now 195 goals later. And he even had that down year last season.

And he even lost about 35 or so games to covid between the 2020 pause and 2021 shortened season. Gretzky did lose about 36 games due to the 94 lockout?

Unfortunately they deleted it before I got a screenshot but NHL Stats posted graphic with a hallucinatory list of top goal scorers w/ the opposing team’s goalies.

Looked like it had multiple mistakes but my favorite was Mike Gardner scoring a goal against Shesterkin in 2021, which +20 years after he retired.

Always remember *Taps The Sign* “AI is making shit up half the time and is not a functional search engine”

A lot of those teams he was on towards the end weren't good so that probably contributed to it too. He missed the playoffs 5 of his last 7 seasons.

It would also require them to be willing to take a big discount so they can actually be on a good team

I wouldn't completely rule it out, but I'm not sure if it will happen in our lifetimes if it does.

The shootout era actually gave more runway for it to happen, but goalies aren't playing as many games anymore.

Vasilevskiy is probably the closest to it, not including the guys like Fleury and Quick who are at or near 40 years old.

It will never happen, even if a player wins a ton before 30 they aren’t playing +70 games and winning +30 after that.

Fleury was the ideal challenger, a physical freak with incredible longevity who started very early and played his whole career on playoff teams.
And he didn’t do it.

Missed this post but ditto lol.

I still think ruefully that Marty didn’t get to 700 wins in a NJ uniform.

I wish Marty had gotten to 700 wins in a NJ uniform.

I agree.

Heard it live on XM while driving. Saw the replay - cannot believe they stopped the game for 20 min to do an on ice presentation at an Isles home game. Seemed ridiculous to me almost like when Marty started hacking the net off with scissors after breaking the record lol.

At least now I don't have to see Gretzky on tv every game now. Get that goof outta the limelight.

First time I read the thread since. You said you don’t see why people would care if it’s an Eng. to me that means you are fine with an Eng
I said I didn't see why people would care because some people online, not just in this fishbowl, were really digging their heals in on the idea that 895 being an ENG would somehow diminish the accomplishment. Surely since you read the thread you also saw where I said "Oh I would 100% rather it be a traditional goal for him but people were like oddly affected by it potentially being an ENG. Glad he agrees, blast a one timer through Sorokin and it'll be glorious."

Maybe I'm in the minority but I never really cared that he played a few games with another distant non-rival team. Marty still wanted to play a few more games and he went out of his way to pick a team that would have next to no impact with his history with the Devils. To me it's just a fun fact about Marty's career at the end of the day.

I have such a distinct memory of Marty struggling to cut the net with the week-ass desk scissors they gave him.

Gretzky played with the team of HOFs in the era when goalies were made of paper. His part of goals of Oilers is lower. Ovechkin survived through 2010' quite nicely. Even with Backstrom as the best partner who scored 30+ goals only once as I remember.
AM has no chance to catch Ovechkin because Ovechkin is much healthier and is better gaol scorer as 39 yo player than AM on his peak.

Great to see history moments, even greater that it was made by such a great player and person and "our boy". He and Sid saved the entire NHL in the age of Youtube with their highlights, with their rivalry. A lot of young children decided to play hockey because of Ovi and Sid. Great to see that both are top-10 ALL TIME as players, both will be in top-10 in points(Sid is already there), both are doing great for their age. Both doing great without looking at their age. Crosby is around top-10 in points, Ovi is second best scorer with broken leg. They are special and its pleasure to watch both. Im little bit sad that most likely we will not see both against each other in play-off.

Ovie was always the easy one to root for and appreciate because of the flash he played with. Over the years, I’ve grown to greatly appreciate Crosby as well. Even though he was easier to hate, the way he matured over the years and played with such consistency cemented his greatness.

What these two have done over the past two decades has been remarkable for the game. And I think that has been what has made my appreciation for them grow each passing year. It’s been fun to watch this group of living legends from the beginning of their careers to the twilight years.
