I understand Necas has expressed some desire to play center but something tells me Carolina just didn't want to offer him the money he wanted so in some sense I think this was on them. We will never know but before he signed that last two year deal they maybe could have signed him long term for something in the mid $7 to $8 mil range. That would have been a good contract most likely. Sometimes Carolina goes full smartest guy in the room. Never go full smartest guy in the room.
As I understand it, they tried to sign him a longer deal, and it would have been for more money obviously, but he didn’t want to sign long term there.
The Canes have a very unique system and he wasn’t very happy playing in it. He has to be thrilled to go to Colorado, his playing time shoots up and the style with fit him a lot more.
They also reportedly signed him to the 2 year deal to avoid an offer sheet next offseason, so they weren’t willing to pay whatever it took to keep him either.
The Necas/Canes relationship soured a while ago, he’s been a dead man walking for a while.
