They've been contenders for just 2 years and last season they lost because Grubauer went down and if they lose this year it's to an incredible Knights team who they're only facing in the 2nd round rather than the WCF due to the format of this season. Comparing them to the pre Cup Caps who couldn't even get out of the 2nd round for close to a decade is absurd. If it continues to go this way for another 3+ years then that conversation can start
Honestly, looking back on it, they should have probably beaten that Sharks team in 2019. That was a team that was way on the downswing, their window was already shut. They’ve finished horribly the two following years since then and Martin Jones was in net for them and that’s a gimme right there.

Now I picked the Sharks to win that series at the time but looking back on it, I think that was certainly a missed opportunity for the Avalanche.

If Colorado loses this series, I think it’s really time to way cool down on the cup contending talk.

They’ve really been hyped up a lot the last couple years, including by me, but they’re dangerously close to Capitals territory before they won that cup. They can’t seem to get out of the second round if they Don win this series.

Really small sample size, but I am starting to question this Colorado blue line big time.

On the other hand this is still a young Avs team. How they manage the cap when it's time to pay Mack what he is worth will be tough, but they should have plenty more opportunities if they fall short this year.

They were still the 8th seed and had 90 pts. Adding Makar turned them into a powerhouse but he still came right out of college and stepped into the playoffs. If he was there longer and more comfortable in the league and with the team and such I think they would've

Goals against review for tonight’s games

Lightning vs Hurricanes: 2 goals against Nedeljkovic, 1 stoppable. Vasilevskiy gets the shutout.

Golden Knights vs Avalanche: 2 goals against Fleury, 1 stoppable. 3 goals against Grubauer, 1 stoppable.

So that’s 7 goals scored on goalies, 3 are stoppable. That’s 43% of the goals scored were stoppable. Combined save percentages were .936%.

I’ll try to meet you in the middle here. I think next year is definitely put up or shut up time with getting out of the second round. You say 3 years, I give it one more. If they can’t get to the conference finals before the next 3 years then there’s really something wrong.

A lot of people (even myself at times) would poke fun at Tampa and label them as chokers before the cup win last year, but they did actually get to the SCF in 2015 and the conference finals in 2016 and 2018. Tampa’s problem was actually winning the cup. They either weren’t getting past the conference finals or weren’t able to win the cup the one time they did, outside of that one isolated first round sweep against the Blue Jackets.

They are losing to a team that finished 2nd in the league and tied them in points for first. That’s hardly a failure if they lose the series.

Them not getting out of the 2nd round this year would be due to the format though. This would be a WCF in a normal year. These are 2 of the 3 best teams in the league

That horrible goal aside, Fleury was a beast tonight
I’m still surprised that he went with Lehner in game 1. Obviously most of the goals on Lehner weren’t bad in that game, but he let in a couple weak ones and one early.

The Avalanche are 1-3 against Fleury in this series.

Even in game 2, the avs were not very good imo.

5v5 it was not close at all. ~70% xGF for the Knights. The Avs PP was insane though. Nearly 2 xG on the PP in that game with 2 of their goals being on the PP
