Well to be fair, this Vegas team is definitely much better than the 2019 Sharks and the 2020 Stars. I didn’t think the 2020 Stars were so great for a cup finalist.

Yeah the Stars had luck on their side to get there. The Avs goalie situation and the Knights getting no puck luck. If either of those things were different the Stars get bounced

Really small sample size, but I am starting to question this Colorado blue line big time.

yeah, you know? I mean - I think alot has to do with the fact that they were 'activated' this game - that they got the directive to join the rush and fly the zone early. Clearly that was the reason for the Burakovsky goal - and I don't know really what happened on the game winner- looked like they both were asleep. I can't imagine what they were doing once that shot was blocked.

Remember the Avs last year lost their starter and back up goalies in the bubble. They were trotting out Michael Hutchinson in goal.

This may be true, but I can definitely see it

they had a ton of injuries last year and this year might lose to a team that is just as good as them. The Sharks lost to an 8 seed after winning the President’s trophy and also blew a 3-0 series lead.

If Colorado loses this series, I think it’s really time to way cool down on the cup contending talk.

They’ve really been hyped up a lot the last couple years, including by me, but they’re dangerously close to Capitals territory before they won that cup. They can’t seem to get out of the second round if they Don win this series.
Makar is 22 and Girard is 23, there’s an age gap between them and the star forwards. Makar is a stud but it’s likely too much to expect a kid whose played a 101 regular season NHL games to carry ball all the way.

They’ve had center depth problems even when Kadri is in line-up and he’s idioted himself out of this series so far. (He can come back for game 7.) Compher is underwhelming and Jost just barely pulled himself out of Bustville.

The best move would be Couturier if he doesn’t re-up with Philly. They also need a back-up goalie. The reason I “hype them up” now is the defense, which they didn’t have before but it likely needs to marinate more. Kadri screwed them big time with that 8 game suspension. And this Vegas team could easily win the Cup, it’s up there Tampa and Colorado. (I find Carolina overrated, so I’m aware it’s partly subjective gut reaction stuff.)

I know many on this board had borderline contempt for Tampa as “chokers” right until they won the Cup, so I know how it goes here.

People wrote off Vegas way too early after that first game. They were literally coming off a series tired while Colorado had been resting which makes a huge difference.

I didn't completely write them off because I thought they were a great team but it's fair for that to enter someone's mind when you see a team get destroyed that badly and the other team just cruised through round one with one of the most dominant series wins ever. The "tired" argument makes no sense to me. They're somehow less tired now in games 2-5 than they were in game 1? They just played poorly

If they end up like the 2010 Caps they're f***ed. Getting Halak'd threw the Caps organization into a half decade long spiral

They would need Makar to get injured, lose his skating, and never develop a defensive game (Mike Green) and Byram to pan out as a bottom pair defenseman (Alzner) to even start the Caps' spiral.

The tired argument is legitimate and absolutely a big factor. Not just physically but mentally just as much or possibly even more. Colorado having all those days off really gives them an advantage coming in. It starts to even out more and more as the series goes on and their schedules are coinciding.

Colorado is way too young to write off for good this soon.

They have built the right way, but winning it all is really hard. They are still in excellent shape for a good long time.

Mark Stone is 5 years younger than me, but look 20 years older

 he is so good but somehow has such a punchable face!

Softy of the night is this Brandon Saad goal on Fleury

I still am not sure what he was trying to do. Still trying to rationalize it in my head. I am a beer league goalie and I have played my whole life in net. But I do not understand what he was doing. I can only think of two options. He either thought the shot wasn't going to beat the buzzer, or he just mistracked it because Saad was skating towards him and the puck curved somewhat. If he just stood up, it would have glanced off his shoulder and the play was over. I wouldn't have extended my blocker, let alone my glove in that position. Such an odd goal. Fleury was great otherwise!

******* vegas. Ugh, this playoff is not shaping up well. Go Tampa and Montreal I guess. Boston and Colorado are likely cooked. Seems like the Avs coach strategy of tearing his team to shreds after game two is blowing up in his face.
