I guess Scherbak didn't appreciate some of Stutt's lineup decisions:

Unsurprising, he said the same type of things about the Canadiens. Seems like it's always someone else that's not giving him a shot, when the reality is he's not good enough to force his way in.

Go play some more fortnite with Brodzinski. Glad he’s not coming back.

Where would they fit?

Doughty-Forbort
Martinez-Roy
Walker-MacDermid
LaDue-Ryan

Forbort is currently the third best defensmen on that list, which makes me throw up in my mouth. If two of those other 5 guys can take that next step it would change the dynamic of the team completely.

Luff is still waiver exempt, so my guess is he will start in Ontario as well.
That is possible but that would make one of those other forward to stay with Kings roster.
Jon Rosen should have Matt Luff article today, might shed some light on where he is staying next season.

There are 16 D men competing for what is likely 14 spots (this is also excluding Bjornfot and Moverare who will play in Sweden), so you will have 2 extra in the ECHL. Not unusual for the Reign to start with 8D, but if everyone comes out of training camp healthy, that usually doesn't last long due to lack of playing time in a developmental league.

Not really a lot of guaranteed spots with a new Kings staff coming in, so everything is on the table. Only absolute locks for the Kings are Doughty, Martinez and Forbort. So LaDue, MacDermid and Ryan (all not waiver exempt) and Walker, Roy (waiver exempt) will battle to see who will be the odd man out who played in the NHL last season. Of course a trade is still possible too. Asset wise Walker or Roy seem the most likely, but I hope they keep the best players and let the chips fall where they may.

For the Reign, the only guaranteed roster spots will be Stanton, Clague and Brickley (assuming Clague and Brickley don't make the Kings out of camp). So after they whittle it down to 7 spots, 2 of the following guys will go to the ECHL at Ft. Wayne: Anderson, Durzi, Phillips, Strand and Reddekopp. The last three would be the most likely candidates, but until we see how the kids stack up playing in a men's pro league, we just don't know.

While I don't think it equals a guaranteed spot I think you have to look at handedness, available spots, contracts and futures.

On the Left Side

Stanton and Gottlieb have AHL contracts in Ontario. Martinez and Forbort will play in the NHL.

Forbort/x
Martinez/x
Ryan/x
MacDermid

Stanton/x

Gottlieb/x

Forbort and Martinez are candidates to be moved by the end of the season.

Ryan is a left shooting D on a one-way contract with over 100 NHL games played. I think it's fairly unlikely the Kings would sign him to that contract then send him to Ontario where he would take ice time away from guys like Anderson, Phillips, Brickley and Clague.

MacDermid has been in the system for what... four years now? He's in danger of being passed by prospects already in the system and if they keep him past this year there are only going to be more coming. I could well see them keeping him after camp and carrying 8D but at some point he has to make an insanely strong case for himself to last the season.

Stanton is a 30 year old veteran. He's not going to be a healthy scratch for a team with a relatively inexperienced blueline.

Gottlieb is 24 years old, the Kings already have too many D to play every spot, there's no AHL roster limit and they don't have an ECHL team where they can manage ice time. I can't imagine they would sign Gottlieb to an AHL contract if they didn't expect him to play a decent amount.

On the Right Side

Doughty is the only "proven quantity".

x/Strand
x/Durzi
x/Clague?

Roy and Walker are younger and better than LaDue and the Kings control their contract status past this summer. My guess is if LaDue doesn't really (and I mean REALLY) shine at camp, he'll be traded, waived or be a healthy scratch.

Sean Durzi and Austin Strand both shoot right. Clague has played the right side if I'm not mistaken. You could get away with sending one of Walker/Roy/LaDue down to Ontario could help stabilize the right side but then who would play RD for the Kings?

My guess is the Kings either start the season with 8D

Forbort/Doughty
Martinez/Walker
Ryan/Roy
MacD/LaDue

or lose MacDermid and/or LaDue to trades/waiver claims leaving the Reign with (no idea the actual pairs)

Stanton/Clague
Anderson/Strand
Brickley/Durzi
Phillips
Reddekopp
Gottlieb

With players moving up and down due to injury/trades as the season progresses.

Jesse, I'm assuming this is you so nice to see you post. Gottlieb slipped my mind, as I forgot they signed him also. He did a nice job coming up last season late, looked like he belonged with his compete and puck movement, but his is undersized. Bottom line is the I think the Kings and Reign will not be penciling in as many players as we have previously seen, and options are on the table for the new staff, especially with both LA and ONT not likely being playoff bound. Players better be ready to earn a spot. I don't think Blake and company will be quite as concerned with asset management as they previously have been with the marginal NHLer's that have been around for a while and waiver eligibility. I think Brodzinski moving on showed that, although not really given much of a chance last year (you win SJ). Take the best players and move on as the organization is now building depth, an option not previously afforded with the lack of picks.

Looks like Johan Sodergran will play with Reign next season.

Cool.

He'll still only be 19 when the season starts and already has 1.5 seasons of pro hockey under his belt.

I feel like he's going to be a slow burn prospect. A guy who will steadily get better each season until he hopefully makes the NHL.

With all the talk about smaller players these days, I still love his 6'3" 205lbs frame.

His size and strength are exactly why this was a great idea. Get him used to playing in the smaller North American rinks with less time and space and utilize his size. We'll get a better idea after a year or two in the AHL to see if he is NHL material.

So, looks like the Reign is adding some young talent for sure: Kupari, Anderson-Dolan (although I see him making the Kings) Sodegran and a decent AHL veteran in Mario Kempe up front and
Anderson, Durzi, and Phillips on the back end. Would be amazing if Vilardi could play.

There looks to be a good nucleus of prospects in Ontario this year. Hopefully they start winning and can carry that over to the Kings in the next few years.

What is the wing depth like for the Kings AHL affiliate? I'm a Kitchener Ranger fan and we have a potential OA player Joe Gareffa (Joseph Garreffa Hockey Stats and Profile at hockeydb.com ) who is unsigned but intends to go pro, planning to go to the Kings NHL camp and hoping to make the AHL affiliate.

He is 5'6 (generously perhaps) and is an offensive defenseman/playmaking winger. He played both positions just about everyone season for various stretches in the OHL. Great vision, agility and good accelartion, good but not high end speed, only ok defensively at the OHL level.

I'm just curious if any Kings/Reign fans can tell me what the realistic odds are of him making it? He doesn't intend to come back to the OHL, but not sure it's time to write him off as there seems to be a lot of D depth at the very least on the Reign.

Joe Gareffa was at the LA Kings Development Camp and he looked good there. I was hoping he gets another look. Thanks for the additional information about him also playing defense. I hadn't read that about him before.....

Was he a LW at Kings dev camp? He was pretty much half and half forward and D in the OHL, and wracked a ton of points playing the right side point on the power play. From what I understand, D is his prefered position and he went to at least one or two other teams development camps as a D in the past.
